"ROLAN SANDS" STYLE Yamaha KR500

Hi everybody, this is the continuation of the JUNK YARD PROYECTS thread, It got really messy so I will separate the proyects, this is proyect one, Ill paste the original information and i will add the recent work:

Proyect number one: TAMIYA Yamaha 500 Grand Prix-Kenny Roberts
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/5141/tam001bs2.jpg (http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tam001bs2.jpg)
My model was very good assembled, in a little diorama, but with year it began to fall apart:
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5204/18ng0.png (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=18ng0.png)
Tires began to crack:
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/2306/h011qk5.jpg (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=h011qk5.jpg)
When it was really broken, I used some big parts for other bike:
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/3232/h009st7.jpg (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=h009st7.jpg)
These are the remainings:
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/3493/h009hr2.jpg (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=h009hr2.jpg)
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/6112/h024qt4.jpg (http://img166.imageshack.us/my.php?image=h024qt4.jpg)
Do you know Roland Sands KRV5? It uses a Moto GP engine, and KR stands for Kenny Roberts, so I decided to turn the 500 gp into a "Roland Sands" style bike, using the 500cc engine and tires, all rest has to be scratchbuild so is going to be hard:
http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/1544/imagen1wy4.jpg (http://img383.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagen1wy4.jpg)
I was drawing on a image of the 500 gp to see if engine matches geometry:
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/4444/27815687zw9.jpg (http://img264.imageshack.us/my.php?image=27815687zw9.jpg)
Then my final model is more or less going to look like this:
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/5028/h002ii1.jpg (http://img503.imageshack.us/my.php?image=h002ii1.jpg)

Im getting all styrene tubing I can, over here is hard to find it, I need it soon to make the other bikes frames.
http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/4628/e017oa5.jpg (http://img370.imageshack.us/my.php?image=e017oa5.jpg)
Y finally began the other bikes frames, I was in a 7 eleven and I saw the coffe straws, there was like 10 of those, so I got them, they have the right diameter, they are really hard to make a frame, It was really hard to find the rigth materials because here scale model culture is not very popular.
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/2932/22033lq8.jpg
Im using a reference picture to bend the tubes (straws), and the original frame to determonate width
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/4286/22010ti6.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/9492/22008bo1.jpg
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/9254/22014sk4.jpg
The Roland Sands original bike doesnt have front brakes, but Im thinking adding them to mine, cause I like this bike to be a open track day one, any way It has slicks.
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/7179/22016gp8.jpg
Making the frame is not so hard, some bends, some glue, some cuts, some putty, the difficult par is to aligne the frame, It means the right distance from the rear axle to the gearbox, so the chain fits correctly, the engine attachments are goning to be the same, Im going to cut them off from the original frame, but I have to calculate the right angle of the engine so the exhaust tubes fit the frame correctly, this is a 2 stroke bike so I have to use the same exhaust tips.
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/7514/22025wh5.jpg
Im exited this thing is beggining to take shape, I cant wait to see the frame painted in yellow.
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/7729/22026ca6.jpg
Im working right know on the "Darla" s frame, I hope tomorrow Ill post some pictures, the frame is longer, are simpler.
Hey I noticed the diameter difference betwen the FZR and Yamaha 500 tires, the grand prix bike tires are much more wide, almost 1/4", is that alike in the reality or is a scale mistake?, two bikes are Tamiya.
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3945/22023cr7.jpg
Here is the rest of the frame construction, hasd to aligne, I cutted off the original engine supports and added them to my hand made frame, so I can have the right width:
http://http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/6641/5005.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/5530/5008.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/4976/5009.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/4290/5010.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/3152/5013.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/4660/5015.jpg
Some primer and a little putty:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/3299/l006.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/8959/l008.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/8727/l002.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/2262/l004.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/7340/l003c.jpg
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/9360/l005.jpg
Testing the exhaust pipes fitting:
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/1173/l011.jpg

Now I have to detail, sand more, add the rear axle holders, and begining building the rear fender and the fuel tank.

Very nice, but... I hope I wouldn't looks unkind with you if I say I found AWESOME this Rolan Sands, his job, his site, his own style... I tried to purchase some apparels but looks like is coming "soon"

So: thanks a lot, for sharing your job and for this new motivation you offered: didn't knowed yet.

My imagination started to play with 1/6 stuff in my garage... :D LOL

Hi, its been a while since my last post, I didnt do anything to this bike for more than a year I think.
but last week and last one I was very active, so here is the progress.

Basic frame almost finished:
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/9035/img2978rg.jpg
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/3088/img2979uj.jpg
Ready to test engine and pipes clearance:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/469/img2980tb.jpg
exhaust pipe is to low, I have to cut it:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6237/img2981x.jpg
The old frame an the styled one:
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/8963/img2983r.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3164/img2997xo.jpg
I had to use the center of the disc to mantain aligned the rim in the axle:
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/9356/img3130vd.jpg
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9751/img3133e.jpg
And now one of the harder but fun parts, the body parts, first in I get the shape in paper, then in thicker paper to correct errors, and then in plastic, you have no idea how much I had sanded, primer, sand, primer, sand...

This project is astonishing Alex! I like your resourcefulness in building the frame, it's giving me ideas on how I might be able to do the exhaust pipes for my project. As it is the tubes are crimping and difficult to bend...

I will definitely be keeping an eye on the thread and no doubt pick up more inspiration.

Not really, is good for work like mine, amateur builds, for scracthbuilds, but if you want perfect finish, tamiya putty is better, besides with testors your fingers will suffer the consecuences, really sticky, takes a lot of time to dry, but it works for me, is hard to find tamiya putty where I live.

Oh I forgot to build the radiator!, I only made the radiator housing, well tomorrow I will do it, I painted the parts white so the yellow is going to be brighter:
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7321/img4326.jpg
This is my first time doing wleds, I usen testor putty, O think they are really ugly but, what can I do, my forst time:
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3439/img4262k.jpg
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/5595/img4333m.jpg
Alclad 2 chrome for the engine and exhaust pipes:
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/782/img4411d.jpg
And some blue, red and gold for the welds, colors are really intense so Im going to do some overpainting with chrome:
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/840/img4413r.jpg
Nice contrast:
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5720/img4415v.jpg

Hi, after a while, here is some advance, this took some time because ti paint, I have to wait from layer to layer diferent colors.
Here is the base color:
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/4493/img4566.jpg
The second color:
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7947/img4679o.jpg
Now the decals, I already made them, but I will post teh process, due the decal paper is really transparent, and I dont have a printer that prints white.
1.-Y painted some decal paper in white ando some in black:
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9810/img4866w.jpg
2.-I printed the background of the decal (in this case rsd logo, stands for roland sands design), and draw the shape im going to use:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1001/img4868s.jpg
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/3029/img4869r.jpg
3.-I applied the decal on the white painted paper:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5372/img4870sd.jpg
4.-Now I cut the piece and applied it on the black painted paper:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/291/img4882j.jpg
5.-Now I cut the piece again, leaving a black edge, and I have my final product
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/944/img4884q.jpg
6.-I put the decal on the model, with some tamiya mark fit softener, I was surprised this softener works with the painted paper really well:
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8016/img4896i.jpg
The decal looks blurry because I made it really quickly, just for an example.
Here are the real ones with the clear coat on, so at the end, they are a fory layer decals, bacause of the logos and number 1:
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/5046/img4871c.jpg
I have used this technique a lot with adhesive vinyl, but the result is very thick decals, even with thick clear coat on, example:
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/8724/tequis014qn5.jpg
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/3548/scale2062qq1.jpg
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/4848/scale036uu0.jpg
I masked the model to paint the white areas, but later I decided to make the decals described:
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1192/img4546s.jpg
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/5307/img4547ud.jpg
I discovered with some tests, that adhesible viniyl is good to mask, the shapes result really sharp, but only if you now you have good adhesion in the base paint.

ALEX GAROLI
05-03-2010, 09:55 PM
Now the radiator fabrication, I used diferent styrene calibers and some fabric net:
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/5500/img4447d.jpg
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/4718/img4448c.jpg
Fitting:
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4300/img4450m.jpg
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2724/img4452q.jpg
Painted:

More fitting:
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/6938/img4880tb.jpg
This is not the final grille, it is just testing material:
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/739/img4881f.jpg
I removed the 15 years old paint, eassy off worked well after 4 applies:
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/6030/img4451l.jpg
I used plastic tubing and really thin wire to mahe the hoses:
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/1151/img4467l.jpg
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/2094/img4471ny.jpg
Pieces almost finshed, I use some CF on the exhaust tips:
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/2179/img4876n.jpg
Now finally comes the fun, the assembly:
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5955/img4878x.jpg
I still have to make some pieces, pegs, shift linkage, brake pedal, some more cables and hoses, but thas a quik job.
Here are all the patterns I had to make:
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4959/img4885x.jpg
Radiator housing:
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/9285/img4887t.jpg
Number plate:
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/3681/img4888h.jpg
Gas tanks:
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/6026/img4889z.jpg
Rear fender:
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/6030/img4891f.jpg
Cant wait to assembly the model, but I have to wait some days to polish and wax the paint, so Im spending my time in a fun quick build.

Well, lets begin the assembly, this is the radiator housing grille:

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/5530/img5016.jpg
