Clunking sound when shifting from R to D

Hello there, I hope I'm doing this right. Anyway, I have a 98 Grand Prix that has recently started to make a cluncking sound and jerks a bit when I shift from reverse into drive.

Also, I went to get a front end alignment and was told that the tie rod ends would need to be replaced first. I got a second opinion and was told that this was not needed. Now I haven't been able to get back in to get the alignment. It's been about 2 weeks. How long can this wait. I just started a new job and do not get paid for another 2 weeks.

Any info you could give me would be appreciated!
Thank you

Engine is a V-6, SRS, with 114,892 miles on it.

Welcome to AF.

It would help to post the model/trim of your Grand Prix. What transmission? 4T60E or 4T65E and when was the last tranny service?

oh my goodness, how do I find out what transmission it is? The tranny fluid and gasket? was changed about a month and a half ago.

On the tranny fluid and gasket that looks OK. Was the screen filter replaced? On the back of the trunk lid there is a label called the SPID label which has GM RPO codes. Look for the 3 letter codes M15 or M13.

M15 = 4T65E
M13 = 4T60E
MN7 = 4T65E-HD

It says M13, and I do not think that the filter was replaced.
