I have a 00 Montana 3.4 on cold mornings I have a lifter ticking for several minutes when I start it. I am getting ready to do a intake gasket job on it. Would it be fairly easy to replace it at that time? Also how can I detect which one it is? My daughter had a 95 Olds 3.1 that did the same thing I used 5W-20 oil and it helped that car had roller lifters that were very expensive does the 3.4 also have rollers ? Is this something that I need to worry about or just let it warm up and go on ? It has 132K on it Thank You

Don't know if it has rollers. Are you certain it is a lifter? These engines have a tendency for piston slap due to the short skirt on the piston. The sound usually goes away as the engine warms up and the piston expands in the bore. Lifters can tick too, but often the plunger inside the lifter is stuck and the lifter will continue to tick even after warm up. If it goes away on warm up, don't worry about it.

I would second the lifter like noise you hear on startup when cold, mine has always done it, and it now has over 185,000 miles, no new lifters. The noise goes away when warmed up. Bad lifters will peck an knock and rattle at all times as mentioned above, not just at first.

My 01 does it and so does my moms 04. I guess piston slap? My 01 is worse but then stops pretty quick after starting it.
