I have a '93 Grand Prix SE with a 3.1 liter engine. It has stalled 3 times under acceleration. It will turn over but will not start. If it sets for 30 to 40 minutes it will then start. No other problems have been noticed. Any ideas?

Could be a crank sensor issue. Does the tach work while you're trying to get it to start? If it does not, look into a failing crank sensor. If it does work, then verify it has fuel by spraying t-body cleaner into a vacuum hose and see if it'll run for a few seconds, if so, then you have a fueling problem (fuel pump or fuel pump's relay). Let us know what you find out.

i to am having this same problem on a 94 GP i will drive down the road and it will just die like its out of gas, my possible thoughts were the TPS/CAS and ignition module

The car finally quit running. I changed the 3 coil packs and it ran prior to total install. After I bolted everything (packs and module) back into place, it did not start. I changed the ignition module and it runs fine now. A good 1/4" ratchet set works nice for removal and reinstall. Unless you have the ability to get to it from the bottom, which you can remove starter and the 3 mounting bolts that hold the mounting plate to engine. I also found 2 sets wires that plug into the module with bare wires, probably from heat and oil. If you forget to mark your plug wires properly you can get the information from Auto Zone or Advanced Auto. Thanks for everyones comments.

Goody, glad you found your issue and thanks for the feedback.

Ilco, welcome to AF.

You can take the ICM to Auto Zone or Advance if you have one in your area and they can test it for free. While taking it off, do like Goody did and inspect the wiring harnesses for corrosion/abrasion. If all that checks out, the ECM is the next most likely cause. It's mounted under the hood and therefore subjected to water/salt intrusion. If the OEM tag number on your ECM is 1227727, that is a very high vailure rate part.

Rich, its funny you have the 1227727 part number memorized. You must have worked on a number of old GM OBD1 vehicles.

My Tech College instructor made us memorize that part number also. Well, he didnt make us, but after repitition (continued replacment), I think we all did.

Wasn't that ECM used in the majority of GM OBD1 vehicles just with different PROM's?
