Using humor and politics together is a very delicate line as you should well know. Also, it seems like a lot of the negative comments you have said were heartfelt and sincere.

Detroit has the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the entire country. Though you wouldn't notice it at the Detroit Red Wings hockey games. :D
I should dig out the links from www.freep.com and www.detnews.com about their reaction to whats going on in Iraq. I imagine it would come as a surprise to some as to how large the support for the war is among them.
But I'll let you on a little secret. The rest of us in Michigan do like to poke fun at the stupid things done in Detroit.

If it is true, then I would imagine these people fleeing from Iraq and benefitting from this donation will be thoroughly screened - national security and all that.
