car started ittermittantly slipping out of Drive or Reverse. Now always slips out. Noticed the Shift Indicator and odometer Lights are out and the 4x4 Switch on the dash is not working correctly. Anyone have any ideas for me?

If the gear selector is physically in drive or reverse and the transmission comes out of gear it is most likely going to be a costly repair. Listen to MT-2500, he is an excellent diagnostician.

Engine is the 4.3 Vortec with auto transmission, will find out more about tranny shortly. Had new transmission put in 2 years ago, maybe 25,000 miles on it. Car has 160,000 on it.

BOO!! Dropped the transmission Filter pan and it was pretty dirty, sludge and metal shavings alongs with a part or 2 of what looks to be a washer. This can't be good but am a little disappointed of the life of this last transmission...(approx. 30,000 mi.)

Just out of curiousness, when the tranny was replaced/rebuilt, were the lines and cooler properly flushed?

can't answer t6hat about the flushed lines. I would assume they were being at a Tranny Shop. I'm sure the warrany is small like 1 yr or 12,000 withever comes first.
