My 2001 Sunfire has a yellow "Service" light (in addition to the "Check Engine " light). All the manual says is that this means the vehicle needs some kind of service. Can anyone tell me something more specific?

Do you maintain your car very well? and has it been doing anything outside the average that you are used to lately?

Service Engine Soon light is related to powertrain problems, the Service Vehicle Soon light refers to just about anything else that could potentially be a problem in the electrical system...
SERVICE VEHICLE SOON
The IPC illuminates the service vehicle soon indicator when any of the following occur:
The IPC part number does not match the programmed model configuration number.
The BCM detects a PASSLOCK™ fault. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM requesting illumination.
The BCM stores specific lighting and horn codes. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM requesting illumination.
The BCM detects a passive trunk release fault. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM requesting illumination.
The EBCM detects a traction control system failure. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the EBCM requesting illumination.
The IPC performs the displays test at the start of each ignition cycle. The indicator illuminates for approximately 3 seconds
The PCM illuminates the MIL (service engine soon or check engine) when the following occurs:
The PCM detects a malfunction in the emissions system.
The PCM performs the displays test at the start of each ignition cycle. The indicator illuminates for approximately 3 seconds.
The ignition is on, with the engine off.

My service engine light came on in my 2000 Sunfire at an odd mileage so I knew it wasn't the normal time for it to come on. So I found out from my handbook a few things to try. I checked my gas cap to see if it was on good, and sure enough, it was not on straight. I straightened it and screwed it on good; restarted; took off, and no more service engine light. I hope this helps you. My light hasn't come on since and it's been several months. My car has 86000 miles on it. I love it, althought it's not starting right now. It would not start the day before Christmas, and according to some postings it's probably the fuel pump.

check to be sure your gas cap is on good and straight.

go to auto zone and have them do a free check... more than likely it can be caused by a faulty O2 sensor, its a common problem GM has on cavaliers and sunfires, there's alot of sunfires that have a messed up sensor before its even unloaded from the trucks :disappoin
