Hello,
I am looking to buy a new car this summer and i am wondering what to do with my current car.
My car..
-1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
-171,000 miles
-Nice outside, Mint inside
-engine runs a little rough
-lots of new fixes and little add-ons here and there.
-passed inspection S+E
So yea i know its old and the miles are ridiculous for resale so, where does that put me? I have had people tell me that the dealer will offer me at least a few thousand because i am buying a 13,000 car, but also some say they won't give me anything worth while. Kbb buts the vehicle around the 1,500-2,000 but I'm not sure a private party would even pay that, at this point and with the fuel economy and high miles. So what im wondering is what can i expect from a dealer and where should i draw the line? When would it be worth it to go through the trouble of listing and selling it privately? All the info anyone can throw at me is much appreciated. Thank you.

Something like that would best be sold privately and then apply the funds from the sale towards your new purchase. The dealer would practically give you nothing , telling you they are doing a favor taking it off your hands.

I suppose that's what i figured, whats a reasonable price to set as a private sale?

Maybe start the listing at $1500 and be prepared for negotiators. Make sure you list the new items and add ons , along with the vehicle's condition, and that it recently passed inspection.. If you have receipts, that can help too.

The ZJ models, manufactured from 1993 to 1998, originally came in three general trims, the Base, Laredo, and the Limited. The Base model offered basic features such as full instruments, cloth interior, a standard five-speed manual transmission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission), while soon gaining the moniker SE name in 1994. Creature comforts like power windows and locks were not standard equipment on the SE, although conveniences like these were finally included in 1995; a somewhat contrasting pricetag with minimal production numbers resulted with low consumer demand and dropping the now-uncommon bare-bone model forever. The Laredo was the mid-scale model (essentially becoming base model after 1996), standard features included added body cladding power windows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_window), power door locks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_door_locks), and cruise control; exterior features displayed a medium grey plastic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic) lower body paneling and five-spoke aluminum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminum) wheels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel). The Limited was the premium model, with the lower body paneling being the same color as the vehicle color. The Limited also boasted standard features such as leather (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather) seating, optional power sunroof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunroof), mirrors, seats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_seat), and remote keyless entry system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyless_entry_system); heated mirrors, and heated seats, a basic onboard computer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer); and waffle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle)-like cast aluminum wheels.
In 1995 the performance of the V8 engine was upgraded to 300 lb·ft (410 N·m) from 285 previously. 1996 brought cosmetic changes ranging from improved body modeling (grille (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grille), bumpers), and integrated foglights; interior features added dual airbags and increased fabric quality for seating. At the same time, the "Grand Cherokee" fender emblems in the American Motors-typeface were replaced with the typeface used on other Chrysler vehicles. The AMC 4.0 L (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Straight-6_engine#4.0) straight-6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-6) engine, able to tow 5,000 lb (2,300 kg), was also refined, through minimal loss in power but gained more torque and presented quieter operation. Limited models that year and onward had more luxury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxury_car) items such as driver placement memory, remote radio control from the steering wheel, and variable assist while driving and parking.
