LS1 vs. EVO ??

I just flew back into town for a week of r&r super excited about pulling my new to me TA out for a drive. I had already had it set up to get HPtuned by an LS1 performance shop here in Columbus. Which I did last night.

After I left the guys place I decided to ride around and look for something to race and I found one for sure. I was coming off the interstate and I get right beside a silver Evo tinted out with exhaust. Sweet looking ride.

I pace him for a bit until we get in front beside each other. We are riding at about 40mph and he honks down 3 and was gone. He shot out by like 2 cars and by time he changed gears he put another car on me. I was like WTF!!! We took it up to about 100 where I starting to reel him in and had gotten back about a car but thats it.

We did this one more time with the same result. I really think I could have caught him if we raced to like 130-140..lol... The thing was a freakin beast. I wonder how bad he would have raped me off the line. I couldnt tell but it was an 8th or 9th gen Evo

I wanted to give him props but the chance never came about. I gotta get to modding this thing.

WTF is live topic?

Live topic is a new feature AF has with it's latest update. Basically, if you're reading a thread and somebody posts a reply, you see the reply get posted instantly. So, if you've got a hot topic going with multiple people reading/posting the thread just keeps going. The Live Topic stays active for a few minutes after each post. Eventually it'll just return to a normal thread after a few minutes of inactivity.

Now, on to the EVO. It's possible it was a worked up EVO VIII or even a modded IX. Either way, those cars can be stupidly quick with not a whole lot done to them. Much in the same way an LS1 can go from being a strong runner stock to a beast with a few mods thrown into the mix.

Don't feel too bad though, now you'll just need to add a few more goodies on that T/A of yours and find him again. :D

Nice race. Stock for stock I would say EVO IX would be quicker in a 1/4 mile run from a stand still as I have seen them tested to run a 12.9 stock. And as -TheStig- said, they take very well to mods like the LS1 does. However, high end speeds the LS1 will start to take over due to the short gearing in the EVO.

The same can be said for stock LS1's running into the 12's. Obviously perfect conditions and a factory freak that runs a bit stronger than most... and a great driver will do that.

I think it would be a drivers race between a stock LS1 Fbody and a stock Evo IX.

Yeah, I can see that. The same could be said with 2nd Gen VR4's. A EVO IX will eat a LS1 and VR4 up to about 60 or 70 but will start to lose ground after that to either one of them. Some guy (don't recall when) ran a 13 flat in a bone stock Stealth but is not typical. Boost controller and you can run high 12's though! :D

All I know is that thing moved out. I believe that I was gaining a little ground but I 'm a little scared of this thing to be honest. I'm used to the GTP getting up to 100 pretty quick but it starts dying out after 80 not the TA though. It just keeps picking up speed.

I got a tune last night and I just installed an SLP lid I picked up at JEGs. A couple more things like LT headers and exhaust and I might be able to give that EVO a go...

The trap speeds will tell the real story about which one is faster. Though naturally, off the line, AWD with a good launch will always get the holeshot.

IIRC, the later 3000GT VR4's would click off 13.4's at 102-103mph if you launched it like you were trying to break it.

Not sure what the EVO's trap, but I thought they were low 100 as well.

LS1? No idea!

LS1? No idea!

Back when I had my LS1 Z28 w/ 6-speed I ran a 14.4 with bad tires (i.e. No traction) and a shot clutch. I still managed to run a 105mph trap, and a 106mph on a subsequent run. And that was only using 3 gears... The Subaru STi I ran against ran something like a 14.3 @ 95mph. He rapped me out of the hole, but I caught him at the end of the track.

LS1's might be getting old, but they've still got some good pep.

LS1's love to wind out, they've got long legs... top end pullers for sure. The ones you really ought to watch for out of the hole are the older LT1's. Those things were little stump pullers. Torquey sombitches! Not to mention they had a little different gear ratios in the 6-speed transmissions. A bit shorter gear'd.

100-103 is more typical for the STI after doing a little research...but yeah, they are on-par performance wise with an LT1/LS1 car, but with the added street advantage of launching with all 4 tires. from a dig, they are brutally quick with a good driver. From a roll...well...my automatic Volvo can hang with them if they're stock.

Not to try and completely highjack but what was your best time in the LS1? The LS1 I was in had pretty nice top end power but it seemed to lack some on the lower end, though it wasn't too bad. Complete opposite of a VR4 which has better down low to mid range power with 315 lb/ft @ 2.5krpm. Without getting a new downpipe and/or getting rid of your cats, it starts to fall on it face after 5.5k rpms.

Those were my best times with it, I never went back to the track after I replaced the clutch. I had troubles with the clutch afterwords and it eventually caused the rear end to grenade on me. Long story short, I sold the car before I could ever go back and try to do better.

But my Z28 was a strong runner (when it ran), was real strong out of the hole if you could get the traction and up top it pulled like a raped ape for a modestly modded car. (Air Lid, Magna-Flow cat-back) I went to dyno it one time to get a base line on it, but the dyno was having issues that day so I never got to see.

Gotta love the LSx's. Even for a lower revving large displacement V8, they just keep pulling and pulling and pulling. Took a ride in a C5 'Vette this past weekend, Long tubes and Corsa catback, and that thing just pulls, it doesn't want to quit.

That being said, I'm not surprised the Evo pulled on the top end. For an AWD car, they are still monsterous from a roll race. I know they've done great in rally, but I've always seen the newer generations (VIII on) to be more of a road course car. Can keep on the gas through the turns, and then just wind out the straights. And do we need to dig up the AMS video again from a few years back, pre 1kawhp? I just might, so I can hear Lostprophets at work.
