Fuel Pump help

I have a 1988 Escort , manual transmission ,165000 miles, CFI 1.9 Engine code 9. My fuel pump does not buzz on when i have the key on the run position like it used too. The car would crank over but not start. I unplug the fuel line at the fuel filiter and got a freind to crank it over and no gasoline came out. I am thinking i need to replace the fuel pump but before i do this .I would like to test the fuel pump replay and check the fuse. Just to verified its the fuel pump. I just cannot find it the fuel pump relay and fuse. Any YES I did reset the inertia switch thinking maybe its that . Could someone direct me to where the location of the relay and fuse are for the pump ?

From a couple of old postings about the fuel pump relay location on a 1st generation Escort:
"It should be under the dash on the driver's side, near the ECU. Its hard to see but if you can contort yourself and get your head underneath the dash and look up you should find it. Its right next to another relay that looks the same, forget which one that is, maybe the horn relay. Hard to find the first time, second time is much easier."
AND......."Check voltage before the fuel pump relay, as well. On my '89 EGt there is a connector ahead of the relay modular plug which accounted for a 2-4 volt loss in my system. corrosion was present. Look for a pair of wires here, one of which is black/red."

Even though there are 150 pages of postings in this forum, there isnt much on the 1st gen. Escorts. Still, if you are going to keep your car, you might want to do some searching. You could look on ebay and buy a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car. The original Ford Service manuals would be better, but they are "year specific". They show up on ebay fairly often. They pay for themselves fast.

P.S. When I have much work to do under the dashboard, I find it easier to unbolt the driver's seat and remove it. Then I put a narrow sheet of plywood down. Then I can lie down on it, with a work light, and my have a good relaxed view of the mess behind the instrument panel.

I don't remember what year specifically but some of the older ones would burn up the wiring under the back seat. Might not be a bad idea to at least peak under there. There may also be a an access for the fuel pump under the seat as well.
