The best 1/24 scale GT40 kit is the Le Mans Miniatures 'Gold Line' kit (multimedia kit ie. mostly resin, fully detailed engine, suspension, chassis and cockpit, open doors and hatches, kit #124012, retails at about $190).

If you don't want to spend that much money, Fujimi is second best. Get one of the following kits as those include photoetch parts, most of the later released lack these PE parts.

Fujimi did so many versions to get more revenue from their GT40 tooling. Adding new decals and a few new parts is a lot less expensive than tooling an entire kit.

Thunder Valley Miniatures did a detail kit for the GT40, which included an engine IIRC.

Why do you want a V12, all GT40's ran a V8 ?

Revell-Monogram did a rerelease of an old but very nice 1/25 Ford GT (that's a 1964 GT40) which includes engine details and IMC (also reboxed by Heller) did a 1/25 GT40 with engine details.

That was VERY informative, just need to track down the thunder valley miniatures kit and maybe get a detail kit (there is another one available from HLJ)

$110 for the detail kit!!!

I'm going to have to save up, but it will then make the GT40 about 10X the normal price lol...

and it means it will eat up about 3 months of kit budget!

Come to think of it, if you just want a Ford 289 or 427 engine, check out the Monogram Shelby Cobra and '68-'71 Mustang kits. You may need new cam covers and make your own exhaust pipes, but it is a lot cheaper and the Monogram engines are pretty well detailed.
Maybe even the Fujimi Shelby Cobra engine would work... Hmm, I wonder how long it will take before Fujimi realises that they can put the Cobra engine in the GT40 kit ... :p
