Muffler/Exhuast question....

The 40/50/70 series by flowmaster. Any idea which one will give me a nice rich sound without being too loud? Loud meaning obnoxious outside and droning out the ability to have a normal conversation inside. The charts obviously point to the 70 series but i'd like to know if anybody can say from their own personal experience which they feel is better. I don't want to sound like a race car but a nice aggresive tone is what i would like. The car is a 1984 305 caprice classic and it would be a dual set up.
(Any idea what the costs associated with having this set up would be? Should I buy the mufflers separate and then take it to a muffler shop?)

since this is for a sound desired,,, I would consult with the muffler shop first..

I have the 40 series, when the engine is cold and at high idle it can be kinda loud though, i have the same motor as you but no cats. after the engine is warm and at normal low idle its a nice tame dull rumble. its kinda loud on the interior but not to where you have to yell. i may get some sound buffering material, or just upgrade to the 70 series

Im running a flowmaster 50..i think it sounds great. it was made to be loud(er) on the outside and less on the inside according to the site. Its a single exhaust, but i'm happy with it.
Heres my youtube video on the before and after:

I have the 50 series on mine. Quiet on the inside (a little louder than stock), a little louder on the outside..

Also, does anyone know of whats good to use to deaden the sound more for the interior? i need something heat and weatherproof of course since its going under the car near the exhaust pipes...

MIKE561 check out the powerblock series of automotive shows MUSCLECAR, TRUCKS ETC. Their website has a lot of information for products like this. Just last week's epidode of Musclecar they were putting some heat/sound shield into the interior of a "70s" mopar. For the life of me i cannot remember the name of the product, senior moment here. Use the internet see what you come up with. Hope your state's smog laws allow the exhaust mods that you are considering.

to reduce the noise from outside the vehicle you double up on the under carpet padding....including up where your feet go including also the trunk area,,,,,as an added bonus the a/c ,,,heat of the interior is better...
the exhaust mufflers should have s/steel shields installed to reduce heat/noise from entering the interior ...they should be a few inches larger than the muffler and fastened to the car body...
the use of rustproofing compound 2-3 coats on the exterior will also increase the reduction of exterior sound...RUSFRE IS A BRUSH ON PRODUCT THAT WORKS WELL...

Dynamat is what you are looking for, it goes under the carpet and attaches directly to the floor.

When I got my dual setup I asked the guy for 3 chamber Flowmasters. That's what I'm used to calling them, 3 or 2. Don't know what that matches up to with the 40/50/70 (anybody know?). 2 chamber would have been too loud for me. The 3 is nice cause it still turns heads when I get on it but my neighbors aren't alerted every time I come home either. Nice rumble at idle, too. If I had a 68 Caprice (my other favorite Caprice) I'd get the 2 chambers.
Also if you're running duals I'd recommend doing some work to the crossmember. I had the exhaust shop weld together (extra $100 on top of exhaust charges) both right sides of a 700r4 crossmember and a 200r4 crossmember (I've got a 700r4). You can see the weld in this pic. That makes for dual humps for a cleaner pipe install.

thanks for all the input. I think i'm gonna go with the 50 series on mine. (it is a three chamber) when i had my ram i put a dual exhaust bolt on from gibson. that kit had 1 muffler and then two exiting pipes. for my caprice, i would have to change the catalytic converter set up, correct? will this keep the car from passing inspection in NY? they don't do emission on 25+ year cars from what i can see so maybe it won't matter.
the benefits of a true dual exhaust relate to strictly power/performance gains or will the overall engine life/care be better as well? I have no intentions of trying to push more power from my car. I just love the model design period. With that being said, I want to get the dual exhaust look and sound but do so without breaking the bank. what would be the most cost effective way to achieve that? i haven't put a limit on how much i'm willing to spend but if i can achieve this by spending $400-500 instead of $1000, that is my goal. keep in mind that i'm not mechanically inclined at all so the entire process would have to be done at a shop which would add labor costs.
What did that set-up cost you dees&vees if you don't mind me asking?

Just curious, how did you get that exhaust by the smog cops on your 87 in socal ?
I would love a set-up like yours on my 89 but the smog police would not approve. :disappoin :headshake

ok, I think I can live with that. spending 500 might as well be 700. did that include all the parts (muffler, pipes, cats, etc) and labor? Hopefully i don't have to deal with an inflated NYC price.

So i called a reputable muffler shop and was quoted a price of $1037 to "modify cross member, install H pipe, two flomaster 50 series and new cats." Seems like a lot more than what Deesand vees paid. Granted, I don't know what kind of relationship he has with the shop that did it and if they hooked him up. Does anyboy feel that this is too much and the shop is trying to get over w/ some NYC inflation? Does anybody live in NY and can recommend a shop that will do it for less in the NYC/Westchester/Rockland/LI or CT (fairfield county)? I'll even consider northern NJ. Thanks

i ran a flowmaster system on my 95 ranger. i wanted the 40 series, but when the muffler guy asked what i wanted he told me the 40 would be loud and scared me out of getting it. i ended up with the 40 delta flow... after all was said and done i wished i got the 40 original... heres a link to the flowmaster site for the 40 original and the 40 delta flow... delta means more baffles

and the delta

there is a tiny link under the picture of the muffler on that page that lets you hear a sound clip... if youre still interested in the 50 series you can also hear them on the site

the cost of new cat's is substantial....platinum in there...
the installation of a muffler system cost is also effected by the metal used...I prefer stainless steel...long life NO PROBLEMS....
to keep the cost down the use of a heavy guage high quality steel is a good substitute,,,this should last 6 years or so....

I wish i had known all this before getting my exhaust done, i herd bhw's single 50 series, sounds more of what i want. but id also like to hear a clip of dual 50's though (if there is any difference) cause ill be replacing my dual 40s wit 50s

so the price they quoted me isn't bad? they told me 837 without the cat and 1037 with. i sometimes like to get parts on my own and just pay for the labor. however, the comfort of some type of warranty is good too. should i just say F it and cough up the money or keep shopping around? The last thing I want is to pay less but wind up with problems down the road.

if the metal used is s/steel and it has a good warrantee, this cost is in the correct range..

So the plan was to get a dual exhaust system. Unfortunately everyday bills have prohibited me from making that happen. Me entire exhaust system is in dire need of attention but i keep holding out because the last thing i want to do i spend money on a regular exhaust repairs when i know i plan on changing it as soon as i can. the car is practically my everyday driver so now i'm stuck. anybody else find themself in a similar situation? what did you end up doing?
P.S. Purchased car 2/07 with 43,000 orignal miles. As of today 4/29/09. the car has 100,500 miles. That's how much i've put on it in 2 years since this economy has forced me to part with my car payment and make this a daily driver. Damn

the exhaust system should be replaced if bad ....this can damage other componets.....one time on my 73 impala the exhaust pipe leaked at a point next to the drive shaft U joint.. I had to fix the u joint and exhaust system....
I buy my vehicles new 0 miles then get lifetime warrantee...one vehicle got 7 exhaust systems cat back for 90.oo US....
since you have little cash the best thing to do is replace cat back if this is all thats needed...
the crossover pipes you need a pro to remove....
expect 3 years in the rust belt with the steel exhaust pipes where you live with your mileage..
