I am looking for a hitch for my 2003 RAV4 to pull mostly a small landscaper type wire mesh trailer for hauling sod/fertilizer/wood. Brands being considered are Hidden Hitch, Curt, and Draw Tight with a class III Curt in the lead because it's the best deal.
What considerations are there for brand, class, and ball mount type (drop, etc.) to make sure that I get proper clearance for the rear door/tire, and the ground and acceptable quality?
Do I care about the 1.5" vs 2" receiver tube diameter of class I/II vs class III?
Thanks,
George

All of the above are fine hitches. They're often much more beefy than the rating suggests (not to say you should overload a class 1, but they make sure they are more than adequate for their design)
The 2" receiver is way overkilll for a RAV4. You can only safely tow a very small amount with it, but it is universal and will have the widest selection of inserts. The 1-1/4" receiver is also pretty universal, but not as popular so insert selection will be a little more limited.
BUT... for what you'll be doing, I strongly suggest the 1-1/4". You have no reason to need weird drops or anything, and the smaller receiver looks less intrusive and is less likely to drag or get in the way. Also, most 1-1/4" receiver hitches come with an insert that is already designed with the correct drop for your vehicle. It will also remove the temptation of over-towing. That RAV4 is short, light, unibody, and FWD... all pretty poor attributes for towing.
Don't worry about door clearance. Most hitches put the ball about 18" off the ground, which means they'll all be well below any hatches, doors, or spares you might have back there.

I settled on a 4 bolt Curt class III hitch with a 2" receiver tube from JC Whitney. Great build quality, good finish, perfect fit, good hardware. I got a T connector harness from eTrailer.com. Works great.
