Carbureted to Fuel injection

I have and 86' chevy truck with a carburated 350. I was just wondering what all would be involved in going to a fuel injected 89' engine?

Welcome to AF.

A lot of time and money to start with.
Engine and computer system and all wiring and fuel tanks and exhaust system.
Also you may run into a lot of EPA and federal emission and state title and vehicle registration and insurance problems.

Your best bet is to jack up rad cap and drive another truck under it and then replace rad cap.

LoL so in other words if its carburated stay with a carburated motor.

HELLO. What isthe condition of your "86" 350. If it is good running shape you could upgrade to an aftermarket "FI" system such as Edelbrocks etc. "88" and later engines were part of the newer designed small blocks. Their requirements were diffrent than the older small blocks.

Mine is actually in good condition. I just found one that was pretty cheap and I though about buying to rebuild but its FI.

cpu, wiring harness, sensors, and TBI unit. Distributor is also different. Also new fuel lines, fuel pump, and different filter. You can probably get everything in a junk yard out of an earlier model truck for a good price. If your converting your motor over you need a different intake too, but if your buying one that has the TBI on it your good. Hope this helps, sure theres more stuff but these are the main things. If you buy all the sensors new its gonna cost a lot of money, so if your motor is good, id stick with it.

EFI on an '80s truck? My vote would be to bypass the TBI and jump straight to TPI. If you're going to all that work, you might as well get some torque out of the deal - Ideal for a truck.

You can pick up a TPI take-off for around $500 most days, including a wire harness and ECM. The fuel pump can be external:

Over ywo years and the pump does just fine, and never starves for fuel.

actually a lot of stuff i've read says TBI is better for performance due to the program ability of the ECM and high pressure injectors. Parts are expensive (the reason im going with a carb) but if you have the money it would be worth it.
