This should have a few of you scatching your heads.
Iam working on my instrument cluster replacing bulbs and trying to fix my trip meter, when I put the cluster back in, it now with the key turned on, the brake light
flashes , it will flash 8 times, and on the 9th time it stops for a sec. and then flashes 8 more times and on the 9th time it stops for a sec.
it will do it with the truck running or with just the key turned on.
if I put the E brake on it will just light up like it should.
the only thing I messed with was I repaced one bulb and took the speedo numbers out to fix the trip meter.
this has me scratching my head for sure.
anyone want to try this one??

It is giving you a code for a ABS system problem.
Them systems are hard to read codes.
Some you have to count long flash with short flash and add them together and some only give one code at a time.
Fix one problem and you may have another code that did not flash code to start with.

On these older ones is there anything to hook up to read?, or do you use jumper wires up read.,I just got this truck, put about 300 miles on it, never had anything come up before this, its been sitting inside, I have not moved it all just been working the time dash lights and the heater /controls, I got all 3 blower speeds working, ended up being 1 of 3 replys behind the grove box.
I had a huntch it could be a code, just never knew how to read themor reset them?
I do know a guy that runs a shop, he may have a scanner for the old ones.if they make them Iam sure they do.?

Or to get codes jumper pin A and H on the diagnostic connector turn key and count flashes on brake light.
Be sure to count the long and add it to the short flashes for true code.
Like one long and 4 shorts = code 5
But as said they only give the first code.
If more codes you have to fix first code the recheck for other codes.
Good Luck

Ok ended up being , that I took the cluster out, I must have made it kick a code, got the number by doing what you said, went to my books, it took me thru a few things, to chack did all that, reset it by pulling the stop /light fuse.
it reset it, no more flashing light, will see if it kicks a code later.

Brake light switch.
Check adjustment first and replace switch if it gives any more problems.
Good Luck

ok started flashing again today, this time I got a 9 and reset it, then got a 5 ?
Iam also haveing speedo peoblems, the speedo stopped working then started working on and off, today, I went on a 400 mile round trip up north.
I have replaced the speed sensor on the trans,
Put in an used instrument cluster, ( my old on speedo read wrong, and had some bad gages)
this used one speedo is still off, 12 to 15 mph ( I went by my GPS)

Are you counting the long flash with the shorts?
Like one long and 8 shorts = code 9
Code 9 is open circuit to speed senser.
Which would explain you speed o problem
Check the wiring from speedo and abs unit to speed sensor real good.

Code 5 is dump valve problem with a abs brake stop.
Are the abs kicking in on heavey braking?
Fix code 9 and code 5 may go away.

open circuit, like maybe a broke wire ?, yes Iam counting the long and short, The time I got the 5 was when I cleared it, by pulling a fuse to reset it, but have not got that code back, so what I need to do so trace wires down look for broken wire or loss wires, I have had 2 diff. clusters in this truck, and replaced the speed sensor on the trans.
ok thank for the info, its going to be warm tomorrow maybe I will get time to start tracking wires.

Yes broken/bad wire or plugin bad.
The ciruit is cracking/breaking up or losing connection .

got this thing straightened out, cluster wasnt pluging in all the way, I had to tear this dash down but it was worth it, just wasnt seating in good, I still need to have the speedo calabrated to the 4.10 gears its off 15 mph.

Thanks for posting back how it went.
On the speedo if you have a gear on end of speed sensor/speedo cable you may be able to change gear and bring speedo in tune.
Good Luck

not so lucky to have a cable, or a gear.
iam told it has to be done from the back of the cluster.

What tranny do you have? 2wd or 4wd?

Not sure if this applies to 4wd or not but for 700r4/4l60 you should be able to change gears in the tranny to get the speedo to work right. See http://www.transmissioncenter.net/speedometer_calibration_______va.htm#700r4

700R4-2wd from what I have came up with is the speedmeter in the cluster needs calibrated, useing a programming clip, that comes in a service kit.
As far as the trans goes, looks like the gear is on the main shaft, the speed sensor I replaced didnt have gear on it.

What service kit? If the kit covers 93 or newer as well, then yes (93 was the first year for 4L60E) they (4L60E) need to be reprogrammed; however, this is not true for 700r4. You will need to replace/change the gears to get the speedo correct.

Give TCI a call. http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/speedo_gears.asp

this is a 1989 C1500, Iam getting info from a service manual, if I know how to , or if you even can do this, I would scan the picture of it where it shows the programming clip, and where you plug it into the cuircit board to program it.
