I do believe that is a high port. If the throttle body is down low than the intake curves up and the ports are high on the engine.
Someone please correct me if I am making a monkey out of myself.

yes that is a high port engine. IIRC its 93.5 and before that had these engines.

The general consensus on the high port is that it flows better and makes more power at the high end.
It is believed that the low port has better low end power but does not have the high end breathing capability of the high port.
In the end I don't think the difference is all that significant and both respond well to mods.

There was also a slight difference in cams between the low port and the high port motors. I believe this makes one of the biggest differences in high end power. The high port makes a little more power after peak. As far as responding to mods, it depends on which ones you are talking about. I've noticed certain mods seem to be a little more effect on one motor or the other (but it may have just been one car or the other). So take it for what it's worth (and that's probably not too much) :D

No, you are quite correct. With all the dyno days SERCA has been holding in SoCal, they've been getting pretty good data. It seems the low port really likes the S series cams - more so it seems than the high port. OTOH, the high port seems to like the C series cams better than the low port - but nobody with a low port has made enough tuning effort to be able to say that definitively. It seems to make some sense though since the C series cams pull like a MOTHER to redline.
I think the same has been found for other mods as well, so I think you are 100% correct based upon anecdotal evidence.

HMMM, my high port doesn't look like that, it has a cover over the whole assymbly. What gives?http://www.sr20de.net/multimedia/pictures/200sx_se-r/alfonso_cortina/engine.jpg
As you can see here where the intake tubing runs into the manifold, there is this cover. That is what mine looks like.

You high port looks suprisingly like a low port :jump:
You actually have a low port motor in your car. What model do you have? It almost looks like a Sentra engine bay? (mainly due to the placement of the radiator overflow tank)
(edit) opps, i'm stupid I see it right in your signature... heh:biggrin2:

HAHA, well that would explain why it looks alot like a Sentra engine bay :D The redline I believe, is the difference between an auto and 5-spd G20. I believe all p10's have the same redline (autos are all 7250 i think, and 5-spds all 7500) Those numbers may be off, but i think it's around there.

I thought they quit putting low ports in in 93.5 model year. When driving my rev limiter is 8000RPM (I know I've bounced off of it before). I think I got screwed, I know that the engine I have is the original because this car has been in my family since new.

Ok, here's the good oil.
The earlier engines have the high ports (where the intake runners attach to the head), and the throttle body and plenum chamber (which is what you call the funky cover) is mounted underneath the intake manifold. That is, on the high port engines, the intake manifold runners curve UPWARDS from the throttle body/plenum, and into the cylinder head intake ports.
The later low port engines have the throttle body and plenum chamber mounted on top of the intake manifold (like in the P11 pic) so that the runners curve DOWNWARDS from the throttle body/plenum chamber and into the cylinder head intake ports.
IIRC, the reason they changed the position of the intake ports in the cylinder head was because, in the newer low port engine, they could avoid having so much of the intake valve guide protruding into the intake port. This was only of limited success because the low port position meant that the intake flow had to turn 90degrees to enter the cylinder. The older high port cylinder heads allowed the intake flow to approach the intake valve at a 45degree angle.
Clear as mud??

Actually, it was for emissions reasons. The intake runners on the high port were often wet due to the placement of the runners and the injectors. They point more directly onto the runners, and thus wouldn't always get picked up by the intake air. The unatomized fuel results in poorer emissions.
I may not have explained that as well as I should have, but that's the essence.

Well, Mike Kojima explained it better. He explained exactly what this did to emissions. I'm not too good at emissions (except after a few Shiner Bocks :right: ). Hell, race cars don't have emissions crap, so why should I learn about it, right? :p
