Transfer Case Oil Seals

Anyone replaced these themselves ? I have to do the front differential output shaft seals too, they're not expensive but I'm just wondering if I can do it myself without special tools. Truck is at 177,500 miles now so I assume it's normal that these things starting to go.

how much fluid do you loose between oil changes...?

I have a 90 GMC K1500 with a NP241 Transfer Case. The front shaft was leaking (not real bad but still a leak). I looked at doing it while the transfer case was in the truck; however, there was not much room to work especially knowning that I need to use a hammer.

I eventually dropped the transfer case since it was also leaking slightly where the case meets. I then rebuilt the case replacing all of the seals and the chain.

For me, there was not enough room to do it so I decided to wait and drop the case.

Also, in my case, the issue was not the seal itself. The leak was coming from the splines of the yoke. If that is your issue, you should be able to pull the yoke and seal it with silicone.

It's not a whole lot but I don't like dripping oil everywhere I park.

It looks like I have enough room to leave the transfer case in place, my question is if I need special tools like one of those sliding hammers ?

I know mine is different but I did not need a slide hammer to get the yoke off. On my NP241, I used a seal tool to drive the seal on since I did not want to hit the front output shaft.

Otherwise, no special tools were needed.

What year? Make sure you are looking at Front Output Shaft Seal.

I think you have a 2000, right? Well, I have the factory manuals and there are 2 transfer cases for 2000: NVG 246-NP8 and NVG 261-NP2. The 246 is a 2 speed automatic and the 261 is a 2 speed manual.

Since they are both 2 speed, I don't know what they mean by active 2 speed and the factory manul does not say anything about active.

If you have the 4x4 push buttons, then you have the 246 transfer case.
