Decisions, Decisions (3000GT VR4, or Camaro)

Help! I just CAN'T decide which to get, a 3000GT VR4, or a Camaro SS.
I'm really looking for some unbiased opinions here.
Say I have $18,000 to spend. I could probably get maybe a '98 SS, for that... or a 95 or so VR4. VR4 is all wheel drive, all wheel steering, 320 HP 6 Cyl and would cost a TON to work on. Camaro is just rear wheel drive, and what, 325HP, and I get a newer car, and its infinently cheaper to work on the sucker. I don't want some kind of flame war (especially if I have bad info! hehe), just looking for some car advice, my 89 Firebird is on the verge of falling apart, and I've just been wanting something new. Help me out here :-). I can't even decide which car's body style I like more! :-P

I'd definately go with VR4 here. It's a V-6 twin turbo, 4wd, 300hp, and is a great car overall. It looks better, and it's a Mitsubishi, so it should be more reliable as well.

i would go with the VR4 too...a camaro SS is good and quite fast, but the VR4 might kill it...

Hehe my friend has a 97 Trans-Am, and he said he'd be alittle scared to race a VR-4. Question, though, how hard is it to work on the VR-4, would I have to take it in somewhere? I'm no super mechanic, but lots of my buddies show me how to do stuff (I build their computers for 'em, hehe).

I've heard that repairs to these cars can be costly. All depends on how hard you work the car.

forgot to mention something about a VR4, the way I see it, the parts for it are kinda hard to find and they're quite costly too....

Ok. I have some insight (surprise surprise) The VR4 will be more costly to repair, but I have less repairs then my fiance did in her camero (97). The VR4 is rock solid on the road. Feels much more refined. Turns more heads. Is a rocket for street races (AWD does that :D ) They look so much better IMHO that they dont belong in the same category. In fact they aren't in the same category. The Camaro is a racing car - lots of speed with little refinement. The 3000GT is a grand touring car (hence the GT) and is much more comfortable for long trips. Insurance wise, the VR4 is about on par with the Camaro SS's although my Spyder does run higher because there are only several hundred in the world.
Get the Camero and kinda be one in a million.
Get a VR4 and stand out everywhere.

Yogs: Yeah, thats one reason I didn't want a Camaro, everyone has one, and its fast... going straight ;-). Only reason I may get it is the cost, but I didn't think about my VR4 actually not breaking, if I got one, hehe!

Track times between a VR4 and a Camero SS are just about identicle. The weight, gearing and traction make the VR4 faster at the start of the 1/4 but the SS will make up the difference on the back end. Modding a VR4 to be a high 12 street car is pretty simple (gut your cats and a $5 bleeder valve) and you'll leave about anything on the street behind.
Parts are getting easier and easier to get ahold of because more and more shops are working on them.
Check out www.3si.org for specific questions.

Have you taken a VR4 out for a spin? The ones I have are AWD and All wheel steering (above 30mph) It holds the road like its glued there. I've never had the ass end swing out on me on a hard turn. It may suprise you that its extremely good on corners even with all its weight.
Either way you decide - good luck!

Nope, I have no friends with one, and can't even find one at a dealer here in Wichita! Some day, perhaps... some day :-P.
But yeah, I will only settle for a VR-4 (AWD, AWS, of course) :-D

I don't agree with you on that. Domestic can handle too man. They are not just straightline speed. Although their massive torque make them ideal for drag racing. Tracks with mostly twisty favor import models. Track with some straight favor domestic models.

I totally agree. You get the same if not more power, plus much better gas mileage. :)

Yes they can still handle, but he is right the Camero is a me too car. I guess if you don't having a me too car. . .

well, out of the two I would go with the VR4, but if I can add a little something, check the classifieds at ZR-1 Net (http://www.zr1.net). There are quite a few Corvette ZR-1's there for 18K or under, and they will do 12s stock...they also handle pretty nicely (not quite as well as the VR4, im sure)Unless you need more than two seats, check out the ZR-1's...otherwise, stick with the VR4.:)

Camaro just have interior parts bin that's share with other GM models. GM's interior build quality needs improvement and better design.

It has two rear seats but they arent built for humans. There is about two inches of leg room behind me and I'm just six one.

I would take a VR4 without thinking..... I don't really like domestic cars, they're not as reliable. The VR4 looks alot better i think, and TURBOed.. hehe

that's like in the jaguar XKR and in porsches... it's impossible for a human to fit in the back :D it's basically like an extra area to put stuff

Whats the inside of the VR4 like? All I've seen are pictures that are poor quality, LOL. Also, is there somewhere I can find what colors I could get a 94-95 VR4 in? (Factory of course) I'm guessing, though, I will have to settle for whatever color I can find, or just paint the sucker.

If you want a mountain of aftermarket suport for the engine get the SS. The SBC has THE most parts. But other than that I would go for the VR4 too. If you had the money the new SS would have been a better buy. But a VR4 is unique. And is also a very fun car to drive. But you have made your decission. :)

One thing you vr4 guys forgot to mention, your car is looking
old, and the SS has a better engine and will last when your
turbos are in the shop.:silly2:

I'll add my 2 cents here... I think both cars are sweet and you'd be lucky to drive either one. But except for the fact that u see more SS's on the road I'd go with the Camaro if you were planning on working on it and adding performance parts.
For these reasons:
1. Remember that 351 is exactly the same block as a Corvette excpet for heads, intake, cam. Nice to have C-5 power for $1500 extra right?
2. It is a lot cheaper part for part and the gains part for part favor the Camaro
3. If you pay some1 to do the work it will be a lot cheaper on the Camaro.
4. It doesn't take much to make that Camaro blow by the VR4 in turns
5. VR4 tranny is strong enough for the stock HP add much more and it will destroy it. This is a weel established fact for all 3000GT owners.

First of all, 02CAMAROSS -- you're a moron. I can't even understand half of what you're trying to say. Try not to be a typical muscle car guy and use some actual logic and intelligence in your arguments.
Secondly, I bought a VR4 over a year and a half ago, and I absolutely love it.
Let the thread diiiieee, geeez.
EDIT: By the way, I knew nothing when I made that original post, about automechanics. I've since done an engine swap on the VR4 (got owned by a lemon purchase of a car with a cracked block due to previous owner abuse [which has nothing to do with the make/model, mind you]) and it really wasn't anything that difficult. I really don't believe that working on a camaro would be easier, especially after messing around on my buddy's Z28.
