I've seen it done before, and had even considered doing it to my 1978 Monte back about 20 years ago. I ended up scrapping the project when I discovered the rear frame rails had rotted out. One thing you have going for you is much more info available from sites such as this one. Back then you had to research through magazines or talk to somebody who actually did it. If done properly, the interior looks good with a floor shifter on these G Bodies. Pair it up with a couple of nice bucket seats and it makes the car rather unique.

If I remember the ones I saw, the owner didn't change the column,( I think it would be hard to try and locate a steering column from a floor mounted car anyways.) In most cases they disconnected the linkage to the transmission and relocated it to the floor mounted shifter and just removed the stalk on the column for the shifter. If you use an aftermarket shifter, the necessary parts should be there for the new connections to the tranny. If you find one in a salvage yard, make sure you get all the associated parts from the floor shift to the trans. including any brackets.

Also, I believe you can use the Chevy Malibu and Buick Regal as options as well as they were also G Body GM intermediates.

It's actually a really common thing, my friend did it with his 81 and even kept the bench seat ( He took a bench saw to it though), I think some of the 81's came with floor shifters so you could probably make the interior look stock with a floor shifter, and just keep the old steering column, no need to go through that much work for something so small. If 81 didn't come with a floor shifter find a junked SS model monte carlo from the 80's that did and take its seats and whatever other parts you need.

I believe they used a 200-4R tranny in 1980 with the V6, and a TH350 should bolt right up. I checked that eBay listing and was thinking that an exterior cover is missing that covered the unit on the interior of the car. ( It was usually black and made of plastic.) No biggie if it's missing, for the price they are offering you probably could find a replacement cover , or fashion something to use in the meantime.
