check the choke for proper operation..check the carb pull off's for no leaks...clean / lube the choke linkage...check that the choke heat stove is not defective...

when the engine is cold, pump the throttle pedal , the carb choke plate should be closed firmly, when the engine starts it should open quickly to create a .17in gap.........

wats da choke heat stove

the choke stove is the thingy that springs the carb plate closed ..as this thingy gets hot this plate then opens slowly...

if this part has become defective it loses its ability to firmly close this plate...

If choke is ok, check EGR valve. If it is stuck open, car will not run right.

HELLO COUPBOY.I had a similar problem with my "84" 305/4bbl. the problem turned out to be the choke pulloff. It is that vacuum diaphram on the front of the carb. It's purpose is to pull the choke back open the small amount that the other poster referenced. When the diaphram goes bad it lets the choke slam to far shut therefore flooding the engine. Check the vacuum line to the choke pulloff if it is leaking ,broken, or missing you will have the same results. The price range when i had to replace mine was in the $15-$20 range at Autozone. If your vehicle sits outside where it is colder it makes the situation even worse. My caprice sat in the garage and would run rich. If it sat outside it ran extremely rich. One other thing to check is the electric choke & hookup wire. These seldom fail but check it out anyway. If the choke is not opening the engine will run rich. May even stall after inital startup. You might check out the other threads in the forum's website I believe there is some on troubleshooting & maint.
HOPE THIS HELPS

Coupeboy, let us know what happens.

I had the choke pulloff go bad on me too. I actually had to put a clip on the choke plate to keep it open while the engine was warming up, until i I figured out the problem. Oh by the way, I had lots of blue smoke pouring out the back when the problem started. Finally figured it out, paid $12 for a new choke pulloff ( Autozone), problem solved.

good luck.

You need a new battery or charge the one you have. Or you have bad cables.

YOU stated that you have knowledge of auto repair...why is it your asking stupid questions like this ?

don't you own a voltmeter ? do you have any tools...?

so far you have done nothing, have not given any results of tests/troubleshooting info, to help you..

I think your just wasting our time ...
