I have a 1996 Avenger with a 2.5L MFI engine. The car is falling apart due to the road salt in this part of the country. I also have a 1990 Eclipse 5 Speed with a 1.8L engine.
How much trouble would it be to swap the 2.5L into the Eclipse, and would the manual tranny behind the 1.8 hold up to the 2.5?

Anything can be swapped in if you have the money to do it. Is it a direct swap? No. Take a lot of custom fabrication, wiring, ECU, tranny, and drivetrain to get this all together. No worth it. Sell the Avenger and the 1.8 and get something worthwhile. That will be your best bet.

Maybe if you dropped the entire front subframe from the Avenger into the Eclipse. It might come close to fitting considering the Avenger and 2G eclipse had the same chassis. You'd also have to swap over all the wiring.

The 1G DSMs is NOT the same frame as the 2G/Avengers. Also, how do you propose "dropping the subframe"?

finding common points between the 1G/2G and fabricating plates or brackets to make it work. Like I said, it's not an easy swap, but it's easier than swapping engines that have absolutely nothing in common (such as swapping in a GM or Ford V6).
