1996 Cavalier

So I own a 1996 Cavalier 4dr. I had a aftermath JVC stereo system put in, but since then my two rear speakers have completely stopped working...

I have a new set of 6x9s to install but it seems to me that the rear speakers in a Cavalier are installed from the top and not through the trunk.

How do i remove the carpet panel behind the back seat. the back seat folds down and i've pulled out the 4 plug thing that but it seems the carpet panel goes behind and inside the plastic paneling on the side between the door and the back windshield.

How do I remove the carpeted piece so I can get at the speakers?

Yank the plastic side curtins which are held in place by only retainer clips. A quick jerk and they will pop right out.

This will allow the top cover to slide right off revealing the crappy speakers. They are seated in black mounting brackets which pop out to make life easier or you can just unscrew the screws with a shorty driver...

Thanks...I had a sneaking suspicion they were...
I didn't want to rip them off without knowing figuring that Murphy's law stated that they would obviously be screwed on or something and would break beyond repair...

I have Pioneer 6x9s in my rear deck. FYI - the stock speakers have to be removed from the top, but i had to mount mine from the bottom. I didnt have enough clearance up top and didnt feel like making a new rear deck piece.

Yeah, my new ones were pretty big two way 6x9's, but I made them fit, I'm thinking about butting out the crappy fiberglass and carpet cover and putting in the ones that i got with my new speakers.

Mine got stolen that way the first time around... I would never again leave them exposed like that. Its quite easy to break into a J-body and make it not noticeable till your key cylinder just turns with your key inside it...

Just pop the curtins man, its a 2 min job to yank both sides and pull the 4 retainer pins holding the carpet to the rear deck.

There is even a how-to if you just take the time and read the stickys in the non-performance section.

I agree with cody, having your speaker be visable is just an invite for people to break into your car. Unless its a dedicated show car, its a bad idea.

oh sorry! i noticed a misspelling that might have led you wrong. I'm planing on *cutting* out a piece of the fiberglass and carpeting over top the speakers so i can install the nice metal speaker covers I have that would be bolted to the speakers and the car frame.
