Verify Timing?

Replaced a water pump, screwed up and began to tighten the cam bolt before putting tension back on the tensioner=timing belt slipped. How can I confirm the proper cam to crank timing? 1995 escort wgn 1.9 sohc manual trans. Appreciate the help, for sure.

Looking down on the sprocket on the crank pulley, count 9 teeth to the left from the gap. That ninth tooth should be aligned with the crank position sensor. With that lined up, check that the timing mark on the cam sprocket is aligned with the timing mark behind it on the head.
That is all there is to it. If the cam isn't on the mark after lining up the crank, undo the timing belt tensioner, align as necessary, then replace the belt and retighten the tensioner.
Timing on this car is super easy.

Thanks for the response, will do it this weekend. This 'gap' that you mention...is this a gap in the crank sprocket? (like a flat or missing tooth). I do not have the car here to investigate so I'm just trying to clarify
