Ready for my 3.0 volcan, 2001 model.I did find 2000 sable donor, with vulcan.
My Mercury sable threw a rod, and would like to replace the bottom. I know this forum is for taurus,. but mercury section seems to be less in activities.. so I'm posting here,.. so please do not remove me.. if possible. I think there is a lot more tauruses than sables.

question one; due to the technicality of torq. conv., is it going to be easy to just swap the tranny with the engine,?

q2.; there seems to be some confusions on the type of tranny with those years. some say it's not changed on the types of trannies, and some say that there is two different types,..etc. is it true??

q3.; some posts say that I should get the engine from the bottom.?? and some say it could come out the top..?? what's pros and cons.?? and in my case, what would be the better way.

if anyone had experience on this swaps,.. your inputs will be appreciated. thanks.. jc.

The shop pulls the engines from the bottom but that's because they have a lift. If you don't have a lift, I think the top would be easier. The Vulcan isn't that big of an engine anyway. The tranny should be the same (AX4S).

The thing I would check is the fuel system. I think I recall reading that 2000's had return fuel systems like the Gen 3 while '01+ had returnless fuel systems. If that's the case you'll need to swap over the fuel system from your '00.

thanks for your response... dr.disque,,I did check the types of trannies,.. and they both have ax4n.... isn't that weird.. I checked the %'sc and 00 had 1/4 of production with ax4n and I ended up with one.... 01 's had more of ax4n in that year,.. I got very lucky on this one, and all my search tells me that they are much better trannies.. well my tranny is fine.. shifts smooth,etc... no slippage,.. doner one has less milage, but unknown.. but fluid looks good,.. and it was crashed.. so I figured should be good... wish me luck..

main point was that for me to replace tha bottom. I know that the torq conv. can be tricky to get installed right. so I am planning to get the bottom and tranny from the donor, and use my tops and heads..etc.. and of course the fuel system, as tyou have mentioned, and rest of the parts from my01. main concern is the t/c.. some mechanics say that is quite tricky to get it installed right.. might not work right after swap.. etc.. in this aspect,.. I have to do head gasket jobs on both side of the heads... but that would be easier that t/c if I have to take it apart again if something does not work right after everything is done.. you get the point.. besides.. the donor has incomplete top, and missing some stuffs anyways..

would the tranny come out the top with no problem..??? it seems quite bulky.. and I'm planning to get it off the front.. with bottom attatched. well.. I'll let you know as I progress with this swap..I'll take off all the frontal stuffs like radiator ac condensor,.etc.. fun.. fun.. fun... or should I just take the bottom off..and take a chance with my existing tranny..?? of course the t/c is the main concern if I do this. is it hard..?? some say it's very tricky to have the t/c set properly. I have never done a t/c and that is one area that I'm just blind. your experience and knowledge will be very helpful on this one.. thanks.. jc.
