I've just replaced both dtrut assemblies and coils. The driver side has a loose sound, like the strut is not securely in place. I was told by a local macanic that it was not fastened properly at the top of the strut, but then he could not find whrer it was normally fastened. (normal for other cars. I took the assembly out myself and other than 2 screws adhereing the top place to the body, I found no bolts as in a normal strut assembly.) It was making this noise before i replaced the struts. The rear sway bar bushing are totally shot on that side. Could this be making the noise?

The rear sway bar bushing if not there could be making some noise on a rough road. I would say take the strut off and make sure the top nut on the shock tower is tightened to about 70 lbs/ft. Also, make sure the spring is seated properly in the bottom of the strut.

Also a possibility.

Some struts on older Fords had the bore oversize which caused noise. You have to pull the strut and lay on the ground. Put your foot on it and hold the end move it sideways you can hear the piston thump when pulling on it.
