94 Sub. exhaust question

I need to do my exhaust from the converter back. Do I need to replace the heat shield on the muffler? Does it actually do anything for the muffler or does it just keep the heat from radiating into the passenger compartment?

Yes it would be a good idea to use the heat shield as it was installed originally.
