Radio problem

1989 4x4 xlt 2.9 auto. I have the oem Ford radio am/fm/cassette recently I have had to reset the radio and clock not every time but often. If you only turn the switch part way the radio setting are fine,but sometimes when I crank it the radio and clock have to be reset. Some say the radio is shot most say it's a wire loose or bad connection. I have tried to fine a wire problem with no luck yet. Can anyone help me find a starting place and a menu of what I should try. Thanks

Usually a loose, corroded wire connection. Most of the time this would be your battery connections. Go ahead and clean up those connections first.

When you say crank it are you talking about cranking the engine over with the key. I wonder it this could have something to do with a worn out ignition switch.

Ignition switch replaced 2 years ago by dealer it shouldn't be a problem but who knows .
are you talking about cleaning the battery post?

one of your radio wires have hot to it all the time which keeps you from losing your time and station presets, the reason your losing these is power is getting interrupted to that wire. it could be in the radio itself or anywhere back to the fuse box. You could run a fused always hot wire to to the back of the radio and that might fix the problem. or try to find the loose or corroded wire by jiggling wires from the radio back
