1997 Grand AM SE :runaround:

Bought the car with junk 2.4, I'm installing a 2.4 out of my old 2000 Alero. Have the motor and everything ready to go and added antifreeze. Heater core hoses are hooked up, there is one line coming out of the firewall on the passenger side that is leaking coolant. What does that line do, I don't know what it goes to? Is there 3 heater core hoses or 2 and does it hook up to the motor? Does anyone have an explanation or a diagram? Or do I have a bad heater core?

If I do need a heater core can someone please supply me with information on how to remove and install one on a 97 grand am se?

Thank You

There is only 2 heater core hoses, a return hose and a supply hose. I have not had the pleasure of replacing a heater core. Which I don't want too.

Heater cores are/were a very common leak on these. The factory heater core used plastic lines, which suprisingly enough, broke a lot. Aftermarket heater cores are all aluminum, so generally once it is replaced, it's good forever. If you have plastic, you broke the line when removing the hose. If it's aluminum, double check exactly where the leak is coming from, if coolant is leaking past the clamp, it can spray against the firewall/foam insulation and look like it's coming from inside the car. The heat core is no fun to replace, but this definately isn't the worst car to replace them on. It'll take you a couple hours and probably a trip to the chiropractor.

The supply hose comes from the water outlet housing (next to the upper radiator hose) and the return hose goes to the water pump.

that is your ac condensation drain line, which means your heater core is leaking and it is collecting coolant into the plastic cover with the plastic drain tube that is supposed to leak clean water from ac only. (replace your heater core) do not damage your plastic cover there are two bolts in the hole that you will not see. You will need 5.5mm socket for them. good luck and be ready for a good back massage after this job.
