i have a 1965 impala with 283 small block engine. the manifold is off a 350 to fit a 4 barrel carburetor. i have the original 2 gear power glide trans, but i am not looking for super performance, just a simple power rebuild to stable performance. i want an edelbrock or a holly carb and dont know what size to get. i just want to know what 4 barrell carb you would recommend for a 283. i am also thinking about changing the transmission to a 350 turbo, would i need a larger or better carb then?

A 450 SCFM should be plenty for a 283 up to 5500 RPM. Going too big will really hurt performance and mileage.

Holley makes a nice 390 cfm carb (4160). If your 350 manifold is stock it's probably got "spread bore" flanges for a quadrajet carb. The Holley mentioned is a "square bore". Adapter plates are available although a "square bore" manifold would be best.
Swapping the tranny would have no effect on the carb size.

thank you very much, but what is the difference between cfm and scfm? does anyone reading this happen to have an edelbrock 4 barrel 450 cfm carb or anything comparable for sale? needing the air cleaner for the carb if anyone has one of those for sale too . . . .

 HELLO. What you are wanting to do brings back some memories. I had a "65" 283 in a "74" Nova. Rebuilt the 283 in 1988. used an Edelbrock Performer non EGR. intake. The carb was a 650 cfm QJET from a "69" era 350. I rejetted the carb. to match the 283. Primaries & secondaries. Ran blackjack headers & hush thrush mufflers. Headers help lowend torque.
HP BOOKS has some books pertaining to the Q JET. Another source is HOW TO REBUILD A SMALL BLOCK CHEVROLET by DAVE VISARD. He has a very good section on how to modify a Q-JET, part #s etc.. Find the earlier edition for your needs. The 283 has the shortest stroke of any of the stock small blocks. 3" It is rpm sensitive as far as torque is concerned. With the 350 tranny you might consider a slightly higher stall speed torque converter. Or if your budjet allows install 700R4 OVERDRIVE. The 700R4 has a real low geared first gear. The overdrive helps on mpg. at highway speeds. They were used to haul around IMPALAS, CAMAROS, TRUCKS, MOST GMs. in the "80s & 90s". So it should haul your Impala with ease.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

If your engine has the intake for a Q-jet already , you could go with a Holley model # 4175 . It is a direct replacement for the Q-jet . It has the small primaries and large secondaries just like the Q-jet . Since you run on the primaries most of the time , you should get good gas mileage . True , it is a 650 cfm carburetor but the small primaries don't overwhelm the engine like a regular 650 cfm carburetor might . The fuel inlet location mirrors the Q-jet setup and the linkage also matches it . It has an electric choke as well . I have one on my 283 and it does great ! Just something to think about !

HELLO 65 IMPAPA. Oldblue 65 is correct on the 4175 holley carb. Holley also makes the 4165 Q-JET replacement #6210 series. If you should decide on a Holley make sure it is equiped with the power valve saver/s. The 4165 leans to the performance side. It has mecanical secondaries and a divorced choke. It was a direct bolt on replacement for the Q-JET on a "69" Nova 350/300hp. Runs great until the power valve messes up. I have yet to install the power valve saver/s in my 4165.
Hope the information helps.
