Today I had the car up replacing the speedometer cable and I noticed there is quite a bit of play when you wiggle the tire horizontally while its in the air. I know that on most cars this means that a tie rod is out, but is it the inner or outter tie rod? Is there any way to tell? I never lifted the other side off the ground but the other sides tie rod doesnt seem to be in any better shape and the steering I have noticed is pretty horrible. It's almost like the body is rolling on the frame and then because of it the wheels are shifting in the direction the body rolled. Anyone know what causes this?

this play may be the tie rods and the idler arm/pitman arm...

grab on to the tie rods and rotate them then look at joint and push /pull up/down does the joint move up/down..compare all..

grab on to tire off ground and push/pull do the pitman/idle arms move up/down more the 1/8 in..if so these are worn....

wheel bearings check for excess play,,,repack bearings every 30,000mi.....adjust nut correctly...

front stabilizer bars need bushing replacement after 10years including the links...this also makes a big improvemet in handling..
