It could be a coincidence, but my truck seems to run sluggish and rough when I get below half a tank. Sometimes I can hear an air thumping noise when I accelerate and I can feel it in my foot while on the gas pedal. My check engine light has been on for months but it just started running rough. I had the codes read and they said it was the EGR valve. They suggested that it was probably clogged. Could the valve had gotten worse? Does that sound right? Is there a few valves or just one and where is it located? Is it easy to fix? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

In most cases you have carbon build up under the intake to fix proper must clean out
clogged ports.

I am having the same problem but acts like it is skipping or pulsing between 35 to 50 and the engine light is on and says it is the egr valve replace it twice but still comes on after i reset the code so how is the best way to clean the ports after you remove the egr valve also my expedition is a 99 5.4 liter.

Welcome to AF!

Hey guys. Could you go to Auto Zone or Advance and get the Diagnostic trouble code (DTC). They will hook up a scanner and give you the codes. There is no charge for that. There are several codes that are directed to the EGR valve. Without the codes I would just be guessing at what your problem is.

You may want to get your cylinder #4 checked. It sits under a heater hose that leaks antifreeze onto it. If it's bad change the plug and boot and have the clamp replaced on the heater hose. That was a common problem with the 5.4 as well as the egr valve.

Ford many times the DPFE sensor is the problem with an EGR code. Always clean all ports when doing this job blow out all passages.
My 1997 Ford with 5.4L I also had to run a can of Winn's intake cleaner also I used a valve on the can with a small hose and let the vacuum pull the cleaner in slowly so it don't stall.
Do basic checks first before scanning and then repair.
