Ok so here is my problem... I just bought a 1999 Z24 cavalier... there is a code that is settig the check engine light off... if I can get the code number is there any chance somebody would be able to tell me what code it is and what possibly need to be fixed...

Usually the book there's a book that comes with the code reader and it should tell you in there. Or you can take it to a mechanic and sometimes they'll do it for free, I wouldn't spend money for them to do that.

P.S. usually when the check engine light is going off it's an 02 sensor. Unless you have an 02 sensor gauge then it's something else lol.

I dont have the diagnostic tool im checking what the code is by using a paper clip and jumping the A and B terminals where you would plug the diagnostic tool into .... and the check engine light flashes accordingly for instance if its a code 23 the light would flash twice pause and then flash three times.. what I would like to know is if anyone has a shop manual for a 99 cavalier and let me know what the code is..... i havent checked to see what the code is yet but i will tomorrow.. and post what the code number is... thanks hope someone is able to help me...

Just got to Advance Auto Parts and use their code scanner for free. Jumping terminals was for the OBDI systems... shit is more complex is OBDII.

Ya I tried it today and was getting nothing... I thought it would work similar to my 91 that I have... apparently not.. and im in canada we dont have an Advanced Auto Parts store... im going to have to call around and see what I can find... thanks for the help everyone Ill keep you posted to see if there is any ways to checking the codes in newer models with out a code reader...

There's not (except on some chryslers and a few imports)
