I am attempting do install a cd player into my '89 Chevy full size. How to I remove the stock radio and separate tape player. I have the dash apart but the wires do not unplug from the back of the radio and tape player. They travel further up under the gauge cluster. Where do they go? Is it best to just cut them off at the back of the radio and wire it into my new cd player harness?

Ok I got it figured out. I found out that the radio is in three different components. The amp, which is below the dash above the gas pedal, the tuner which is on the dash, and the tape plyer which is below the center vents. it was kind of a pain to remove the amp. You just have to unplug all the wires to the amp and snake them back through the dash.

Ok, Circuit City is going out of busniness so I was able to get the stuff I needed fairly cheap. If you have one local go check it out. Mine has the center dash vents above the tape player. You can buy an adapter kit that replaces the center vent piece with an identical piece that will fit a standard size aftermarket radio. Then where the tuner next to the cluster used to be you can buy at most car stereo shops or at the dealer the "radio delete" box that goes there. It's just an empty square you can put change, reciepts, or in my case it holds my GPS well. I will try and post some pics if I can't pm me your email address and I will email them to you so you have an idea what I am talking about.

I have a 90 and I put a CD player in the spot where the tape deck was. I went with www.crutchfield.com for mine. They include everything you need to do the job including the radio delete box (mine holds CDs now) and the adapter for installing the CD below the vents in the old tape deck location.

Ok couldnt find a Circuit City around here, so I went to cruthfield .com, got a nice kenwood, fit real good, sounds good just no bass, now Iam not wanting to blow the windows out or rattle my truck loose, but what did any of you do for speakers?, right now Iam still stock, sounds good just no bass. I called crutchfield, they did help me with a small sub. with its own amp.
300 bucks , not sure Iam into spending that, I will if that is mt only my of getting any bass at all, so anyone put any speakers in there truck that fit stock , or know of any nice small 6 x 9 boxes that dont eat up all the space behind the seat?

I've been through the same drill. I put an aftermarket CD player where the original tape player was. I installed 4 3x5 (stock size) Pioneer speakers where the originals went. For extra bass, I installed a cheap amp and subwoofer under the seat. The subwoofer is under the driver's seat so it rattles my keister. The total price:
head unit: 100 bucks
amp: 100 bucks
subwoofer: about 50 bucks
speakers: about 150 for 4
misc shop supplies and wire: 20 bucks
Total price = 420 and it makes enough noise to drown out rap at stoplights.
