grinding noise

hello, i have a 2000 mountaineer. when i am stopped and wheels are turned and then proceed i get a grinding sound fron the front end. then it stops. i have just replaced both wheel bearings. is there somewhere i need to be looking? thank you all..

I believe your transfer case is going bad (the chain inside the case is overstreched and it makes a grinding noise
I had the same problem until a knowledgeable backyard mechanic diagnosed the problem. Sure enough. Read below
I've just replaced my transfer case (from a 2000 model) on my 1998 Mountaineer($350.00 + Tax from the Salvage Yard/ A rebuilt one will run you Btween $800.00 to over a $1000.00) B-careful when buying one, not all transfer cases are created equal they come as full time and part time. Get to know what you have when it comes to transmissions.
Well to make the story short, my problem stopped my SUV runs very smoothly w/out any bothersome noises coming from underneath.
Also don't forget to rehook the connector for your overdrive right above the transfer case, otherwise your O/D will start blinking and your vehicle will run rough as if on 2nd gear and your RPM will run between 2500 to 3500 specially climbing hills not to mention the gas & oil usage and strain on your motor and tranny.

thank you willie, now that you mention this a month or so my o/d light was flashing. i checked the trans fluid and was about a quart low i have no idea where it went. but could the flashing o/d light be an indication of the transfer case going? it has stopped flashing but still grinding. thank you for your time..
