Silvr's new setup...

Ok guys some changes have been made to my turbo setup. The old turbo manifold kept cracking and warping and I couldn't get rid of the leaks so
I junked that one and went back to the stock 420a manifold. This manifold flows a lot better than the crappy log mani and I will be able to use the stock heat shield. Anyways I built an adapter to mount the turbo to this one and fabbed up the exhaust this past weekend. Took me 2.5 days to complete this mainly because I spent almost 2 days welding the downpipe. I would post some pics but right now I have to replace a bad gasket and get the intake back on so it looks like ass right now. Going to fix all that this weekend.

Now for the "secret" I have been keeping from everyone, here it is. My buddy is planning on turboing his beamer soon. Well due to some setbacks its going to take longer than expected so Im getting to test out the turbo he bought for it. Its a TD06 20g, I was wanted to have it on in the next week or so but still have to make the adapter plate for it so it may be a month before its on the car. Its going to spool a little slower but from what I have read it shouldn't be to bad. We will just have to see, anyways enough talk here is some pics...

Inlet on the 20g is 2.25" : S16g is 2" but tapers down to around 1.8"

Looks like when me and Brian compare sizes.... Brians' is on the left, Daves' is on the right... told you I was bigger! :evillol:

Damn that thing is nice. I can only imagine what traction will be like when fully spooled.

I got a lot more tax money back that I expected so Im going to be getting some track times with it soon. Im kinda bummed that I didn't get to push the 16g past 18psi at the track. It had a lot more in it when you crank up the boost. Hoping to hit 12s with this turbo, maybe low 12s if I can get some slicks this summer. Going to try and dyno around 400whp with it also this summer. It would be way to crazy to drive everyday like that but I would my setup to be capable of it.

Huge difference. You could probably get into 12's, but low twelves.....thats tough. Gotta get some vids though. Also, what car did mitsu produce that ran that turbo?, or maybe I should say that housing?

I have no idea what car this turbo came from. Several people have run into the mid to low 11s on a 420a with a 20g at around 25psi. With slicks of course

very nice is that a t3 hotside inlet? I am surprised you decided to upgrade so soon but why not I suppose the stars alligned ;) What do yo uthink the max you can push on pump will be thats the next limit there.

SilvrEclipse
02-03-2009, 03:16 PM
Yea its a t3 hotside. I wasn't planning on upgrading till the summer at least but this was free so why not put it on. I need bigger injectors before I crank the boost up to high but Im hoping over 400whp on pump. It may not work out I dont really know yet.

Wow thats suprising. Im just not a very optimistic person

Since the 20g will not be on the car for a month or so Im going to make another trip to the track with the s16g. Cranking the boost to about 24psi, hoping to trap 110 in the 1/4 and low 13s at the very least. If I can get a really good launch maybe break into the 12s. Im going to try launching in 2nd gear off the line. I have done this a few times on the street and I still get some wheel spin but no near as much. This would also save time on the 1-2nd shift. Looking at the last logs from the track my average shift from 1-2nd was around .45s which is a lot of time right off the line.

Silly Garret flanges, I was kinda tired when I first read this thread and was confused as hell about the T3 flange on a MHI 20g, then it dawned on me that you can just swap them out.

I'm kind of excited to see what you guys can do! I'm especially interested in how you and Dave do with MS, stand alones are something I kinda want to know more about.

I have been running MS for fuel and spark since July. Car runs awesome still. You have to understand that its not the factory ECU and the car will sometimes shutter at low rpms and stuff like that but its no big deal really.

Finally got some pics of the new setup. Just finished changing one of the exhaust gaskets this weekend and got the intake on. Its going to take a little more work for the 20g to fit. It clears everything but the exhaust doesn't quite bolt up to that stupid T3 flange so I either need a TD06 dsm housing or alter my exhaust some. Haven't found any semi cheap housing for sale so Im not sure what Im going to do yet. I will have some new track times in 2 weeks also.

Still have to put the stock heatshielding on and weld the wastegate dump tube.

Ok guys changed my mind. Just remembered that the TD05 and 06 wheels have the same shafts just different size wheels. So Im going to pull the shaft out of my 16g and put it in the 20g and use my 7cm housing. So it will be a TD05 20g. Its going on tmrw, I will have some more pics.. Still wont have the wastegate dump on yet so I wont be able to tune it much yet.

20g is finally on. Took about 2 hours to pull the turbo, change the shafts, and put everything back on. Just got back from the test drive, wastegate still isin't finished so cant do any hard pulls just hitting boost and letting off. It spools about 500rpms later than the 16g which surprised me since its the same turbine with a bigger compressor wheel. Anyways here are some more pics.

Pics are fixed now. My computer was being gay earlier so I just left it and waited to edit it later. Sorry guys, the car sounds so f*ckin nasty now, everything is so much louder its crazy. I will have to get a video on here soon so yall can see it. Also going to try and get the wastegate dump fabbed up this weekend.

I don't remember if you said you had 2 fans or not. Get another fan in there. You'll need the two.

Finally got the wastegate pipe welded this weekend and got it put on yesterday. I did a few pulls logging everything with MS workin on the tune. Car pulls pretty hard at 12psi and got it up to 20psi a few times. Never really got above 70% throttle but it was pulling hard. Injectors peaked at 65% so I should have plenty of fuel for 23-24psi for the track runs. After class today Im going to turn the boost up some, dial the fuel in and mess with ignition timing some making sure its not knockin. I promised Dave a video this week, I may be able to get one today I just have to figure out how to hold the camera...

You need that mount that I got for my camera. It clips on with mounts for the passenger or driver side headrest and puts the camera right in the center of the car. I threw a wide angle lens on it and it got the whole dash, out the windshield and it looked good. Too bad the Firebird had bad glare out of the windshield on a really sunny day. But it still made for a good video. :2cents:

Nice.... that's awesome. For my camera (digital camera, not a camcorder) I have attached a tripod to it and then stuck it between the headrest and the seat and then angled it however I wanted to. I haven't perfected it yet; if I turn hard it falls over and then everything is at a 90* angle. But I will be making a mount for it to hold it in place better.

Ok I got a quick video today. The car is tuned up to 22psi and it pulls so much harder than the 16g ever did. Also the boost doesn't drop off in the higher rpms. My injectors are hitting around 80-85% DC so I think this is the limit on the 650s. This video doesn't do the car justice, it seems slow to me in the video since you cant see the speedo but I will have track videos up next week which should be better.

nice

wonder if youd get a good shot if u stuck it in the same place that u tried first, except on the passenger side...

that way the view could possibly have the road and everything all in one frame

just a thought haha
