Have always been able to find answers here so I was wondering if you all could help. I am used to getting the cold knock in the AM when its cold out but now I am getting a ticking noise after it has already been driven and warmed up....suggestions and fix ideas???? this is for a 99 GA GT with 112k on it Thanks

Welcome to AF !

Probly your lifters if they've never been replaced.
When was the last oil change, and what type and weight are you using ??

Another thing to consider is short drives during the winter causes excess moisture build up inside the engine. Which can cause your lifters to tick more.

I had this problem in my 99 GT and eventualy one collapsed , then I had to take it all apart to replace them. I was lucky it didnt damage anything else.

Thanks for the welcome XeroInfinity. This is the absolute best forum out there, I have never been able to find so much useful information and friendly posters on top of that. Top notch place you have here! Anyways I just warmed it up for about 10 minutes and still had the ticking noise but after I drove about fifty yards it stop and sounded normal. What I was wondering now is how hard and expensive it is to replace my lifters? This is my main vehicle and the one my wife and kids use so I cant afford for it to get damaged. But like most people these days I cant afford a whole lot. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If it does quiet down I wouldnt worry about it just yet. Just keep up on the oil changes.
Unfortunatly to replace them requiers the lower intake to be removed. And its kinda time consuming.

Has the lower intake gaskets ever been replaced ?

No nothing major has ever had to been done to the car...my GT has been extremely solid and a great vehicle... have had to replace the belt, tensioner pulley and tires. But other than the basic upkeep its been great.

my wife has a 99 grand am gt with the 3.4 and it started ticking and it was the intake gasket ( these motors are known for intake gasket failures). it took me 9 hours to change it and about$300 in parts. now works fine and no ticking.
