ford zx2 tranny

My uncle has a 1999 ford escort zx2. The transmission stopped working yesterday. No previous warning, grinding or stalling. It will shift into nuetral but that is all. Does this automatically mean the tranny is bad? Any help would be appreciated,

It could mean the tranny is bad. First, check the ATF level and make sure it is up to full.
