How often to replace suspension components?

I have seen many ranges of miles and years between servicing and replacing suspension components on the Grand Marquis. I've noticed over the last year that my suspension has been getting somewhat rough all around, and not just in the winter. All but one of the upper ball-joints are original. The driver side front ball-joint was replaced two years ago. The shocks, control arms, bushings, etc. are all original. I'm at 87,000 miles on my 2000 GM and was wondering if it's time to replace them.

If it is time to change them, I would love to learn how to do this myself, but I simply do not have the tools or garage space to do it in unfortunately. With that said, I will have to take it to a shop to get it replaced. Around here I have a Midas, a Monroe, and a Lincoln/Mercury/Jeep dealership, and that's about it in ways of garages. I got my brakes done recently at Midas and they treated me very well, however I've read on these forums that Midas shocks are not very good quality. Do you have any suggestions on where I should look for to get this done? Additionally, if I buy the parts myself, would it be unusual for me to take the parts to a garage and have them do the labor?

Thanks for your help!

Shocks are usually stated to be replaced somewhere under 50,000 miles. The bushings are replaced when they are torn, worn out, squeak or really loose. The control arms do not need to be replaced unless they are bent or broken. Shocks are a preference to the driver. Some like a "floating" ride while others want a "sporty" ride. So that will be your call. Some shops may install your parts, but they will not warranty them. You should be able to replace the shocks yourself fairly easily. The hard part is getting the top nut off the shock.

Under 50,000 miles? Wow, I'm a bit behind! I did see a topic comparing the feel of the shocks (the sprty ones vs the smoother ones). I'll have to find that topic again and figure out what will be most similar to original since the ride was fantastic on Ohio's crappy roads. Thanks for the info way2old. As always, much appreciated!

Most peolpe do not replace shocks until they break, leak or wear completely out. We replace the shocks on our cruisers at around 50k to keep the Police happy. Gives me a free pass home also.:naughty:
