Two children should be limit, says green guru
Sarah-Kate Templeton, Health Editor
COUPLES who have more than two children are being “irresponsible” by creating an unbearable burden on the environment, the government’s green adviser has warned.
Jonathon Porritt, who chairs the government’s Sustainable Development Commission, says curbing population growth through contraception and abortion must be at the heart of policies to fight global warming. He says political leaders and green campaigners should stop dodging the issue of environmental harm caused by an expanding population.
A report by the commission, to be published next month, will say that governments must reduce population growth through better family planning.
.................................................. .............................
“I think we will work our way towards a position that says that having more than two children is irresponsible ..............
.................................................. ............
The British population, now 61m, will pass 70m by 2028, the Office for National Statistics says. The fertility rate for women born outside Britain is estimated to be 2.5, compared with 1.7 for those born here. The global population of 6.7 billion is expected to rise to 9.2 billion by 2050.
.....................
How much of a leap will it be to go from irresponsible to illegal to have more than 2?
Any guesses who they're talking about when they say the fertility rate is higher for those born outside GB? (Hint, I bet he's not talking about those evil Americans.)
Disclaimer: I'm not a proponent of huge families, but I can see a day where the world government will either enforce contraception or outright sterilization. I'm not an advocate of such fascist activities.

It's an interesting issue. On the one hand, there is no doubt that population increase should be halted immediately. Massive over-consumption of irreplaceable natural resources is going to have a largely negative effect on future generations, I think we just don't know to what extent yet. Over population is probably the single greatest problem facing the world at large, and will become even more pertinent as India and Africa's populations explode in the next 50 years.
On the other hand, I don't think governments should make it illegal to have more than 2 children, as that is stepping on the wrong side of the slippery slope in my opinion. What they should do is discourage such activities with tax penalties while simultaneously increasing awareness and providing education to the poor, who have a higher reproductive rate due to lack of education and access to proper birth control.

I think he was refering to immigrants when he said that. We have the same problem here in the US. Immigrants here have more children than native born couples.

Britain's highest birth rates among migrants
A baby boom among immigrant families is driving the population to a record high, government figures will show this week.
The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, will reveal that Britain's highest birth rates are in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, both predominantly Muslim.
The birth rate among women born in Pakistan but living in the UK is three times higher than that among British-born women, the figures will show.
Separate figures due this month will reveal whether Mohammed has overtaken Jack as Britain's most popular name for baby boys.
