I have a 2005 Silverado Ext. Cab and want to keep the factory unit, has Bose system and it is powerful enough for me.
What I want to do is add a MP3 player to my system. I have seen the AUX adapter for about $60 and may have to go with that.
This idea may not even be possible but here is what I am looking to do, I would like to add some sort of external hardrive or usb drive to my system that is controlled by some sort of controller that would let you choose the folder and then the songs in the folder. I know this sounds far fetched but they make 6 disk changers that you put under your back seat with a controller. Well what about a small USB drive or 2.5" hard drive in a case with a controller. You would have the USB drive or hard drive either under the seat, in glove box or some other place that is hidden, but would be easy to remove and take inside and add more songs to it or upgrade if needed.
I have a 20 gig Pockettec USB drive and this would be ideal, but how would I control it and then hook to my factory unit.
Any ideas, pictures, links or help would be great. I would like to keep the cost low and not unreasonable but would look at any ideas.
I have seen alot of MP3 players out there and without seeing them in hand I am not sure which one I would purchase if it my idea is not possible. If you know of any MP3 players that lets you make folders and then put songs in them and then would display both making it easy to navigate, please post the links. I may have to go with that and the AUX adapter.
Thanks for the info in advance.

I use the IPOD 20gb...works for me and when you add up all the B/S to do this by another device it's too costly and a PITA...
this as YOU know is portable, therefore use it in your home or on your fleet of vehicles ...no problem.......
I don't recommend removal of the OEM this can be a can of worms............

there are a bunch of new design aftermarket head units that have USB port and controll files on it which ever way you want to.
DO NOT BUY FROM CRUTCHFIELD. it is about 60% overpriced. you can buy very decent unit from BestBuy or Maghnolia, or such (CarToys are very overpriced) and have it pro installed at no extra charge.
you end up with about $300 expense for a very quality unit, and WARRANTY. no headaches.
of course, now that you said that "power is adiquate", you'll start looking for a good sub about a month after you'd have new head unit. it's inavitable.(I have Basslink behind me, THAT is powerful enough for me, have to taim it all the time, $127 off internet).
I do my MP3s at high end 96Kbps/44100 Hz, Freuhofer. It is CD quality and you can fit much more songs on an HD.
Get yourself Adobe Audition (from ...hunt.org is comes free) or Adobe CoolEdit Pro, as you can do cool thing with it: record and edit music off internet. get Pandora radio, free, and lastfm.com radio, free. they both broadcast at about 140Kbps, which is way enough for your needs. it is FREE source of music that YOU like, as you can set stations up so that they don't play crap, like sat radios - and, also, will introduce you to artists, similar to those that you like, and you never knew they are out there. lastfm is stationed in GB, so you'll have nice exposition to artists completely not known in the USA.
enjoy music.

Well after looking far and wide, I purchased a Aux2car adapter for GM and installed it. I then borrowed an MP3 player and tried the IPOD on it and it sounds really good. Now I am going to find the MP3 player that I want that will play folders so I can setup different Playlists. The Aux adapter, harness and 3.5 mm audio input dash mount was 40.00 on ebay shipped, used but works great and was way cheaper than new. The dash mount 3.5 mm plug was easy to install and looks nice, drilled small hole in dash and it popped in and works great.

You have to get the harness and then as an extra that came with mine was this one:
