I use Royal Purple 5W-30 in my 08 4Runner (V8). What's your thoughts on change interval? I was thinking 6,000 miles...

A lot depends on your driving situation. I use synthetic in my vehicles and leave it in the engine for about 12 months or 12,000 miles whichever I reach first. About halfway through that time I replace just the filter and top off the oil to compensate for any loss during the filter change. The filter is an important part of your engine's lubricating system so changing it out during the interval ensures proper filtering of the oil. Synthetics were meant to be used for longer intervals because of their properties of better lubrication among others. You pay a lot more for synthetics so it doesn't make much sense to change it out sooner than you really need to. A lot of the "3000 mile oil changes " with conventional engine oils are unnecessary with today's advances in oil technology. A lot of it is hype started by quick change oil businesses looking to increase customer traffic and profits. If you look at many owners manuals you will see they have longer oil change intervals.
(On a side note: if more people used synthetics or adopted a longer oil change interval, say 5000 to 7500 miles, we could cut our dependency on foreign oil and have less oil overall to dispose of/recycle.)

As stated by 97ventureowner it depends on driving situation.Things to consider is do you live in extreme temp. change region, have to run higher RPM's to pull long steep grades or multiple short quick stop & go's.The more extreme driving the quicker your oil properties will begin to break down. If you really want to get info on when you should change your oil do a search to find a company you can send a sample of your oil to & they will tell you how well your oil is doing.Do that once or twice & you will have a know exactly when to change your oil & as an added bonus they will also tell you how your engine components are holding up.It is basically giving your engine & oil a "Physical" You may be surprised @ how long your oil is lasting

Thanks for the feedback. My driving habits are pretty light: no towing, not much stop-n-go traffic at all, no steep grades, and very little high RPM driving. I'm going on 6,000 miles so I may wait a couple more months and another couple fo thousand miles before I change the oil. I will check the oil visually and may send in a sample for analysis. When I checked the level last weekend, the oil looked new: clear and golden-hued.
I use the factory oil filters from Toyota, but I've heard some good things about Wix. Any thoughts on Wix or other filters?
