1996 Ranger 4x4 won't engage

I have a 1996 Ranger with 212,000 on it. It is a 3.0 5spd with manual hubs and electric transfer case switch.

Earlier today I attempted to use the 4x4, but the system just clicked a few times and now I get the 4WD and 4WD Low lights flashing on the dash board. These two lights flash at the same time and on and off five times. The system will not engage the 4x4 and there is no clicking to be heard like it normally would. I checked all three of the fuses that are listed in the manual that have to do with the 4x4 system, they are all good. i have searched this forum, but could not find anything.

So, I turn the question over to the forums vast knowledge. Thank you kindly for any insight and assistance.

My idea is this. Do to the age of the vehicle and the mileage. I would think that there may be some rust or debre in the motor mechanism. You might try taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning. And while your at it check the wiring. Good luck and keep the ranger going.
