99 Ford Explorer 4x4, V6, Auto. - After driving vehicle for a few minutes, the overdrive light starts flashing on/off. The transmission doesn't seem to be downshifting just the light flashes. I can turn engine off, wait awhile, start again and light will go off but again comes back on after driving for a few minutes.

One owner with 112K miles, never had any previous problems with od light. Serviced trans. at 50 and 100K. even had them suck fluid out of troque converter during service.

Any help would be appreciated.

See if you can get a code reading. The flashing light indicates there is a problem and more than likely there will be a code stored in the PCM. It should be something like a P0743. Let us know.

I hope yours is an easier fix than mine was. My light was flashing and tranny would start off in a higher gear at take offs when the light was flashing. I took it in and paid 734.00 dollars to have the entire v/b rebuilt, new solenoids, seperator plate, bearings the whole works. It still does the same damn thing. Went to a different tranny guy and he told me what the problem sounds like. Their is a shaft that goes through the tranny and it allows fluid to pass through to shift. It is steel and wears down and you have to tear down the tranny and bore out the shaft and clean it up again. That is my next project. a full tranny rebuild runs about 2200. bucks. Good luck

Some Ford's have a problem with a wiring short in the shift lever this is for the one on the transmission. You have to take it apart to look but a cheap fix.
Search forum's as they had pictures.
