86 D21 Hard Body

I have searched the posts and found a few simailer issues, but none that match exactly so here is my issue. Hopefully someone can help me.

I have a 86' D21 Hard Body with a 6 cyl dual cam motor. It has just shy of 652,000 original miles.

Problem, when I turn the key I have all electrical, but when I turn it to start it does nothing. The starter does not engage, but a relay under the dash clicks. The owner's manual (yes since I bought the truck new, I still have the original owner's manual) does not even show this relay. It is in the fuse box under the dash and the fuse lid does not show it either. I entend to replace the relay and the starter relay under the hood, but incase that doesn't work does anyone have any other suggestions. It was starting fine until last week. It wouldn't start when I stopped at a store, but did after a few minutes. I assumed the coil was bad and would not hit when hot but now will not start at all. It could still be this and it has gone the rest of the way out, but I thought the starter would at least turn over with a bad coil, just not fire. I have checked all connections from the battery to the starter and from the solenoid as far as I can under the dash to the key switch. It goes into the fuse box, and I think to this relay I am changing.

Thanks in advance

Turns out that relay is a secondary starter relay so it just may be my problem. I will let you know.

Thanks anyway.

This relay wasn't the issue. The truck still started once and then would not start again. I changed he starter and the same thing. It will turn and start once, after that it will not turn over or even try to start. The "new" relay under the dash clicks, but the starter never even turns. It has been 2 days since I tried it, if I go out right now it will start once and nothing after that.

Any suggestions?

Problem finally fixed, broken wire from the key to the starter :banghead:

what wire did you determine was the problem. I have had this problem with my D21 as well. I have done everything including consideration of putting in a starter button to by pass the switch.................
