Please if anyone can shed some light on this I would very grateful. Heres the scoop.
I bought a 1997 GTP a couple of years ago for my daughter. It drove great. Bought it with 97k miles and it now has about 135k miles. I have been having work done on it at random intervals to get it ready for me to drive since she got herself another car. I have had just about everything replaced on it. Even the beast The multi function swith in the steering column. Now here is the deal, sorry to ramble..The car seems to drive fine at first, during the daylight, and while its at the garage, No codes are present on the diagnostic. When the sun starts to set..The tach will peg to the neg side and then the car dies. Just a little brief history, The reason they changed out the expensive multi function switc was because at the time whenever you would turn on the blinker the Tach would buzz then go neg then the car would die. This is very diff to explain..As I am very frustrated.. I hear a mech tell me "we drove it around all day but nothing happend." I get in it and start home and it begins to die.. On the way to the shop this morning it ran great. On the way home in the eve Tach pegged neg, no buzzing then died. I dont know what to do. Ive already put way more than the car is worth but I need something to drive for the reat of the year...Any help would be great...thank you

I have had just about everything replaced on it.
The tach problem and the presumably dead ignition hints to me at a problematic crank position sensor as that is the basis for firing the ignition/coil packs...was that already replaced in the above processes?
Also it is possible that the engine harness is chafed somewhere and you are grounding something out intermittently...I would do a very thorough inspection of the split black conduits, also making sure any ground terminals have been reconnected after the repair work.
A rubbed-out spark plug wire can also do some wierd stuff regarding pegged or jumping gages...but I would think that would be more of a misfire than a stall.

Thanks a bunch for the reply, I have not had the crank position sensor replaced, I have never even heard of it. At the shop today all they did was remove an after market alarm that was not being used, heck I didnt even know it was in there. They said should take care of it...It died on the way home, no sputtering or anything, in fact I was driving along about 30 mph, I looked down and the Tach was below 0 for about a hundred yards or so and It was still running. I was slowing down for a car in front of me when I went to accelerate the car was dead and I didt even realize it. It has been a stange problem... I have had it to three mech and about $2800.00 later well you get the picture...I am going to look at the things youi suggested in the morning....Thank you very much, at least I have a direction to look. I dont feel so powerless..

we'll help you get it figured out....
Does the TCS off light come on when it stalls? As crazyhorst stated, "tach dropping to zero" is a common symptom of a failing CPS sensor. WHen it dies are you able to get it restarted?

The most recent time it died(yesterday) No indicator lights came on. No check engine, no nothing. A few weeks ago when on the way home from the shop. The time it kust kept dying over and over usually about 5-10 min apart, the abs light came on and stayed on. when I started it yesterday it was the first time I had started since then and the kight was out. No codes or anything. just another note. A few months ago my daughter was in a fender bender which she smacked into the rear of another car. Airbag Did not deploy. I was thinking maybe is there some kind of a kill mechanism that might be malfuncioning??

TCS = Traction Controll System, The light is located on the Driver Information Center. On SE's and GT's, I think its labled "TRAC OFF", on GTP models, I think its "TCS OFF". Or at least mine says TCS OFF.
About a year ago, right around 80,000 miles, my car just died out of no where, Tach dropped, and TCS OFF light lit up. It would not restart. So I got out, checked for fuel (ok), and checked for spark (none). About 10 minutes of dinking around, out of no where, it starts. I drove it straight home and replaced the Crank Position Sensor. No more problems to date.
Was the Fendy Bendy towards the driverside front of your car?

1st off I dont recall seeing the TCS indicator, I will look again. I dont know if I stated that whenever the car dies it usually starts right back up the runs great then dies...The fendy bendy was pretty much in the center, messed up the bumper and the hood a little left of center. No damage to the radiator though. I drove it home from where it was wrecked..

I think they are waiting to see if you replaced the Crank Position Sensor.
I did some searching in this forum with key words from your symptoms and everything seems to point to the CKP.
As a matter of fact tblake had something simular to your problem happen to him and it was the CKP.
I am not sure if there is way to test the CKP without a scanner or lab scope.
Just my 2 cents.

Would that produce any codes or is it something that is diagnosed by symptoms. When my car dies it generally starts right back up and runs fine, of course until it dies again.. Thank you

As suggested and based on your symptoms replace the crank position sensor.
Symptoms vary and no codes may be stored along with no SES/CEL light. But the tach acting up right before the stall or engine dying is classic crank position sensor which is really two hall effect sensors in one. A 18X since you have a '97 L67 GTP and a 3X.
We have a replacement procedure at our Tips & Maintenance forum page 2 to give you an idea of the work involved which can be done DIY. Part runs around $25-$50.
