Cherokee Sport Shutting Off

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport with about 165k that will shut off on me when the car is running but not moving... When I stop at a light, it will sputter and eventually shut off. It will start immediately after.
I've been reading some other threads and I've noticed that some folks had similar problems but in all cases, the car has shut off on them while driving. Mine has never done that. I've also (knock on wood) never had a problem restarting it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated...

try cleaning your throttle body, it is cheap (under$2).

Thanks, 2000izusu. I think I'll do that in addition to the plug change... but what's interesting, now that the weather outside is above 50, the problem has gone away. It starts, idles, and runs fine. I did nothing to it.
I've read some stuff about cold temperatures effecting the performance of the battery...

sounds like your CPS ( crank position sensor) is starting to go bad, the part cost about $70. at Parts America, its not that hard to replace but if your not wanting to do it take it somewhere it should run you about $35.00 to have them install it, I would have this replaced as soon as you can once the CPS goes out you are stuck where ever your rig decides to quit :crying:

i doubt its the CPS because it would more then likely shut off also when driving, and the CPS is 32 bucks at autozone
but it would more likely, quite positive actually, since i just had the same problem with my cherekee be the IAC sensor it very easy 2 replace on my inline 6 its located on throttle right next 2 the TPS
hope it helps

$32 Really.. Hmm not sure what part YOU are looking at but here is a link for the one you would need to replace the CPS
http://www.autozone.com/N,15100111/shopping/partTypeResultSet.htm
i had the same problem with my jeep, it started out with it just cutting out, i ignored it then after awhile it started to do it when i would be driving down the road, it would always start right back up but after a while it took about 5 Minutes to get it to start up after it quit running, CPS is a common issue with the XJ, search the forums, if nothing else you will have a new CPS and one less problem down the road:headshake

Regardless of which one is causing the problem, better safe than sorry... small price to pay to avoid being stranded on the side of the road. Thanks for the help.

Also, when you clean your TB, make sure you remove and clean the Idle Air controller (IAC). Clean out the bore in the TB too.
FYI: The CPS for an 88 (like mine) is $32. :) The one for a 2000 is "rudely" more. :(
