i ahve a 1985 gmc jimmy with a 2.8 liter v6 and a manual trans. it cranks over fine but won't fire. i checked for spark and it doesn't have any. the guy i bought it from said to me before i bought it that it had an issue with not starting sometimes but then other times it would start. i have multiple coil packs for it but they have tested good (one was a brand new one) what do i need to check and what could cause it not to have spark. i had a problem with my 89 cavalier that the crank sensor went bad and wouldn't let the car have spark but i was told that the jimmy doesn't have one. i would really appreciate any help on what to look for or test. thanks

Ign module and dist pick up coil needs tested.
Is dist turning when cranking?
Battery voltgage to coil.

Where are you checking for spark?

i was testing from the coil to the coil wire that goes to the distributor. i have 12.26 volts from power wire going to the coil. what do the 2 wires coming from the distributor do? what does the other wire (white wire) next to the power wire do?

i started testing stuff after i bought a repair manual and i found that the ignition module was bad. i replaced that and it started right up. :)

Thanks for posting back how it went.

Yes proper testing before throwing parts at it makes you healthy wealthy and wise.
Sure saves head aces and helps pocket book out.
