I recently bought a 94 Grand Am and have been troubled by the check gauges light that seems to come on whenever it likes. All of the gauges are working and nothing seems lacking elsewhere, as far as oil pressure, etc... This is the only light that comes on (all others go out right after start-up) but also goes out for short spurts before coming back on again. Is this an inherant problem with this make of vehicle or is there something that can be done about it?
Further to the info on this problem, I was monitoring the gauges as the vehicle was idling and noticed that the fuel gauge was reading 7/8 of a tank. The check gauges light came on and a few seconds later the fuel gauge jumped to read just over full. The light then went out again and the gauge did not change readings. Unfortunately I didn't have time to watch it any further as it was on it's way into the shop to have the rear rails replaced. Although, I did as you instructed and checked the systems with an OBD 1 scanner but found nothing as far as trouble codes, and the fluid levels are within acceptable levels. I should mention 2 other things.. this vehicle has a 3.1 V6 and it is located in Canada (if that makes a difference). I was researching the possiblity of replacing or cleaning the MAF sensor but noticed that my car does not have one.

Welcome to AF !
Might check for trouble codes. Your car is ODB I pretty easy to check, here's a link with the procedure and trouble codes.

Though the check gauges is probly nothing, double check your fluid levels.
Also these ICP's are known to short out and quit working from time to time.
