Programming keyless remote...

I'm trying to program the remote for my 97 Golf. For some reason, I can't get it to program. I've tried to different ideas from googling around.

IDEA #1.
Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

Procedure
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.

3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.

IDEA #2
.....As long as you've got 2 key blades you can re-sync the fobs to the car. Open car, put 1st key in ignition and turn on, shut door and lock with second key then press and hold unlock button on remote for a couple of seconds. Unlock car with key, turn off ignition remove key, shut door and try the remote.... should now be re-sync'd to the car. Repeat with 2nd fob and your done.

Neither of these work. Does anyone have the right idea?

Here's the procedure that Volkswagen had me do:

1. Put one key into the starter, put in position 2 DO NOT CRANK ENGINE!!
2. Close all doors and lock the doors using a 2nd key (clockwise)
3. Now unlock and HOLD (counter-clock wise) and hold for about 15 seconds.
4. You now should hear three short beeps.
5. Push any button on your alarm fob, and your VW should respond with a single short beep.
6. Redo step 3, and your VW should respond with another three short beeps.

That should conclude the programming procedure.

If you do happen to have a second alarm fob, just push any button on the fob after you've pushed the button on the 1st fob while programming. Your VW should respond with two short beeps to verify that it has synced with a second remote.

Are you sure you have the correct remote?

There is a HELLA version, and a CLARION version. They are NOT interchangeable.

Hella remotes are the switchblade smart keys. Clarion is a dedicated alarm fob with a separate key.
