How often should the timing belt of an '01 Elantra be changed? Also, does it matter if the majority of miles are highway or city?

Thanks,

Ed

What if the timing belt goes on this car?
Is the engine done?

The engine is not destroyed in all cases, but you can assume if you break your timing belt, then that's really bad. It's probably the leading cause of Hyundai death.

WRONG WRONG WRONG! ! The Elantra has an interruption engine.

Various engines are "interruption" engines which means when the timing belt breaks the valves stay in the position they are in at the time the belt breaks. So, valves that are left open meet the upcoming piston and bend the valve stem, bend a connecting rod or crack a piston and possibly damage the head in which case I hope you have deep pockets to pay for the repairs. My 07 Elantra cost $415. to replace the belt and I had them replace the water pump and fan belts resutling in a total bill of $561.00 They have to pull the water pump to treplace the timning belt so having the pump replaced doesn't cost you more for labor or replacing the belts.
Weighing the cost of repairing a badly damaged engine versus NORMAL HYUNDAI RECCOMENDED MAINTENANCE is not brain surgery and ignoring, or trying to rationalize away, the belt change is in my opinion beyond ludicrous. It can all be done in a day at a Hyundai dealer and the work is guaranteed 12 months or 12 thousand miles.

IMO, ignoring the 60K mile timing belt change is like playing Russian Roulette loading all six. FOLLOW THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE, TAKE OF YOUR HYUNDAI AND IT WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU. Matters not highway or city miles, JUST DO IT.
